Record ratings for A-League

Sunday’s A-League Grand Final pulled the biggest ever audience for A-League with 296,000 people tuning in.

2013-04-23_0010Sunday’s A-League Grand Final between Central Coast and Western Sydney pulled the biggest ever audience for A-League with 296,000 people tuning into FOX Sports.

The numbers eclipsed the previous record, the 2007 Grand Final between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United by 14,000 viewers, and thumped last year’s Grand Final average audience by 38 per cent.

FOX Sports CEO Patrick Delany said: “(Yesterday) we witnessed an incredible ending to what has been one of the most remarkable sporting stories of the year.

“Never before has there been so much interest in football in Australia and FOX Sports was there every step of the way with live and exclusive coverage of every Hyundai A-League match.

“At the beginning of the season the headlines were all about marquee signings which no doubt helped raise the league’s profile and crowd attendance but, the real story at the end of the day, was the emergence of quality teams and contests that captivated fans.

“This season was the most watched season in the competition’s history with more than 2.8 million viewers tuning in to FOX Sports’ live coverage with average audiences up 23 per cent on last year.

“With over 33 weeks of prime time coverage, the Hyundai A-League is emerging as a real gem for us in summer and has well and truly cemented itself in the Australian sporting fabric.”

  1. These are good ratings for FOX Sports. @tihsamikah. the numbers were never going to be as good as AFL or Rugby League, i dont think anyone would have deluded themselves in thinking that. That being said its still a good number considering its mainly played in summer and its not a mainstream media sport a such. I cant wait untill the new broadcast deal begins next season with SBS joining the FOX should be interesting. If the Grand Final is Live next year on SBS as well as FOX then i think the numbers will be bigger. THe numbers on pay tv will always be smaller because of the lack of penetration level of pay tv for obvious reasons.

  2. I think without a doubt football has been held back in Australia by the exclusive broadcast by fox sports of a-league and socceroos games (similar issue exists with super rugby). So next years arrangement with live game on sbs will be very interesting to watch to see how if rates. On a side note nine news certainly seems to have an anti football bent – live cross to Damien Ryan with match report said game had been held up due to crowd trouble – yes flare was thrown on ground but game was stopped for penalty kick anyway

  3. still well behind nrl, afl and cricket on fox….

soccer was being outrated by the simpsons

yet fox sports makes it out like soccer is their highest rating sport.
