TEN acknowledges Biggest Loser scandal

TEN acknowledges an incident on The Biggest Loser, involving an "inappropriate relationship" between contestants.

2013-04-02_1003TEN yesterday had to acknowledge an incident on the set of The Biggest Loser, briefly reported by New Idea magazine, involving an “inappropriate relationship” between contestants.

The mag headline screamed the show had been “rocked by sex scandal” but didn’t elaborate.

“Very early in the process of putting together The Biggest Loser: The Next Generation, there was an event involving two contestants,” TEN later confirmed.

“In line with our strict duty of care obligations, the incident was referred to the relevant authorities. Therefore, we cannot comment any further other than to say that contestants were unable to continue with the show.”

Whilst one can only speculate what constitutes an “inappropriate” relationship, it’s clear the parties were pulled from the show.

This isn’t the first time Loser has had to drop contestants ahead of a season premiere.

In 2010 a contestant was charged with child porn offences frantically requiring the show to replace him and re-edit weeks of episodes to exclude him.

Meanwhile publicists for Loser yesterday were also fending off an April Fool’s Day gag tweet by journalist Amanda Meade that production had halted due to a heart attack involving one of the contestants.

  1. Well, TT did a story last night on ‘behind the scenes’ and what happens when the cameras weren’t rolling. I read that tweet about the heart attack but realising the date figured it was an April Fools joke.

  2. Jason: ‘A pretty sick attempt at “humour” by a “journalist”.’

True enough – but to be fair, Ten were already promoting the April 1 episode as containing “a disastrous shock for the Biggest Loser camp” (or similar; I forget the exact wording), including images of people with a shocked look on their faces, crying, and an ambulance on the scene.

A pretty sick attempt at “humour” by a “journalist”.

  4. Do the networks have any come back at the contestants for the costs involved they have caused the production or do they just cut there loses ?

From memory the terms of conditions for entering these sorts of reality shows has pages of rules weighted heavily in favour of the production company and I wouldn’t be surprised if the contestant would be finically liable for the extra production costs due their misconduct.

    1. Unless somebody talks or charges are laid (and it may not have extended that far) it may not emerge. It sounds like Producers did the right thing, but hard to say. It’s also people’s lives here so let’s not presume we know everything.

  5. @Bogues im pretty sure they planned for the yellow and blue team to arrive a week later , no way they wouldnt have put them in the mix due to their sheer size and wow factor for viewers as odd as that sounds…

  6. There must have been some good photoshopping involved, cause I can’t recall seeing any blurring or pixelation in this season.

It does explain why the yellow and dark blue team entered a week later than everyone else.
