The BBC has confirmed a new series has been commissioned with Steven Moffat as executive producer.

Following the season finale of Doctor Who in the UK, the BBC has confirmed a new series has been commissioned with Steven Moffat as the show’s lead writer and executive producer. Brian Minchin will join Moffat as executive producer.

In late November a 3D telemovie will air in the UK to celebrate the 50th anniversary with Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, David Tennant and John Hurt, plus Billie Piper, Jemma Redgrave, Joanna Page… and the Zygons.

Later this year the BBC also premieres An Adventure in Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss, that looks at the genesis of Doctor Who.

Matt Smith, who has played the Doctor since 2010, said in a recent interview that he will return for season eight.

  1. Thank you for this news David. 🙂

OK this will be longish. But I’ve got some ideas to keep the Doctor Who viewers watching at least the first ad and maybe more. It’s theoretical and if considered too ridiculous or is disliked then it can be safely ignored.

First as an individual viewer I’d like it if Doctor Who was largely left intact. So no pop-ups or messing up the credits. Hopefully voice-overs could be very rare. Keep the Next Time trailer intact please.

The first idea is to play a Doctor Who DVD ad after the end credits finish. Maybe have a new ad the first episode and repeat it later on. Since there is a whole swathe of other ads maybe play them. Perhaps a different Doctor each week to keep it interesting. Then perhaps end with a new ad for the last episode if there is more than one episode in a row and it’s possible.

Another idea is play a new show ad (eg. like Adam Hills Tonight) after the end credits instead of during them. I always looked forward to both the ads and shows on Sunday on the ABC. Just not together.

The last idea is have the Doctor Who DVD ad first then the new show ad after. Again separate from the credits. Reward the viewers for sticking with the ads instead of punishing them during the show. See if it works. If it doesn’t then something else would need to be tried.

  2. The finale was wonderfully dark and sinister, reminiscent of the glory days of RTD and Tennant. I just hope they keep heading in this direction and move away from the kiddy-style antics.

  3. I hope we do not get the 3D version.

It’s not a shock that DW was renewed, this is such a big show for BBC I don’t see it ending (again) any time soon.

The question should be how many more years with Matt Smith play The Doctor?

  4. Absolutely brilliant news!

What a a whopper of season finale last night – I was left jaw-dropped by the opening sequence. Very cleverly done!

Who knew Mr Ollivander was an incarnation of The Doctor – he could have helped stop You Know Who!

David, I believe you’re a fan of the show? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the finale, and anticipations for the 50th Anniversary special 🙂
