Former ITV exec becomes Head of Commissioning at SBS

UK exec becomes new Head of Commissioning for SBS ONE and SBS 2.

Alison SharmanSBS has appointed Alison Sharman, formerly ITV’s director of factual and daytime, to the new position of Head of Commissioning for SBS ONE and SBS 2.

Sharman has over 20 years’ experience as an executive with public and commercial broadcasters in the UK.

During her seven years with ITV, she commissioned shows fronted by Billy Connolly and Joanna Lumley and shows such as Long Lost Family, Britain’s Secret Treasures, 9/11 The Day That Changed the World, HMP Aylesbury, Strangeways and Our Queen.

She was previously Controller of BBC Daytime responsible for BBC1 and BBC2 daytime, commissioning shows such as MasterChef, Eggheads and The Afternoon Play.

Sharman also held the position of Controller of Children’s overseeing CBBC and CBeebies, commissioning In the Night Garden and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

SBS Director of Television and Online Content Tony Iffland said: “Sharman joins SBS at an exciting time as we seek to build on our reputation for telling diverse Australian stories through impactful content that pushes the boundaries and gets people talking.

“Having a dedicated Head of Commissioning as part of the SBS team will be an important part of meeting the challenge of entertaining audiences across our platforms with innovative and thought-provoking local content in a competitive and fragmenting media market.”

Sharman added: “I am delighted to be joining SBS and look forward to this exciting and challenging opportunity. My ambition is to build on SBS’s success and grow its reputation for being one of the world’s most unique and diverse broadcasters.”

She begins in August.
