2013-06-24_1013Tonight Mythbusters has a 10th Anniversary special, and also their 200th episode.

To mark the occasion the team returns to the myth that began it all: JATO Rocket Car.

The legend goes that a speed freak strapped a JATO rocket to the roof of his ‘69 Chevy Impala and it accelerated from 80 km/h to 550 km/h in no time flat. However, a bump in the road launched the car skyward and it soared through the air for a couple of kilometres and flew into the side of a cliff!

The question is whether this tale is true or just an urban myth. Ten years ago, Adam and Jamie set out to find out but the rockets could only get the car up to 210 km/h. In 2007, still hot under the hood, they returned with bigger rockets to launch the Impala to new heights. However, in a fireball filled finale the car crashed and burned on approach.

Now the Mythbusters have got some new tricks up their sleeves. Firstly they are more armed and more dangerous with more rockets. Secondly they’ve engineered a state of the art remote control system, and finally, they’re unleashing the Beast, a giant impenetrable moving bunker.

After their first two attempts to test this myth went up in flames, Adam and Jamie are hoping it will be third time lucky for this jet-assisted jalopy.

  1. Who would have thought a show about a couple of geeks would last so long. In hindsight, the premise for this show is pure gold and attractive to a wide viewer age range.

  2. According to wiki it’s the 198th episode, wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MythBusters_episodes#2013_season

It was on Discovery the other week here but they don’t show them in the same order as the US either.

  3. Not sure if this is actually the 200th ep SBS has aired as it was the first ep of the new season in the US but SBS has aired others from the season here, including one that is yet to be shown in the US.

Doing the math and not including the current season there have been some 224 ep, 17 of these were specials like Xmas, Jaw and Hollywood. So I don’t know where they came up with the 200th show thing, maybe it’s based on production numbers?

  4. One of my all-time favourite myths/Darwin Awards entry. I remember first reading about it in an aviation magazine before it hit the then-nascent net.

The question about whether it’s true or not was answered a long time ago. I think the question now is “is it even possible?”.
