2013-07-06_0115Home and Away is switching from New Zealand broadcaster TV3 to TVNZ at a time when the former is in dire financial situation.

Distributor Endemol cancelled its agreement with TV3 following its owner MediaWorks being placed into receivership last month with debts of about AU$594m.

KordaMentha partner and receiver, Brendon Gibson said “It is regrettable that TVNZ has convinced the distributor to cancel our agreement. However, this business is much bigger than one show. TV3 continues to lead the way with producing excellent local content, broadcasting popular international programming and has the best news and current affairs in the country.

TVNZ’s channel TV2 will air soap on weeknights with catch-up opportunities at weekends.

TVNZ networks already airs Shortland Street, Neighbours and Coronation Street.

TV3 has aired Home and Away since 2002.

  1. I think Network 7 can launch dramas very well and make them successful!
I think they have shown repeatedly that they can effectively damage a drama by their programming practices.
All Saints, City Homicide, Packed to the Rafters just to name a few. I realise there are other factors as well, but the programming hinders viewers enjoyment when shows are yanked mid season or ridiculous starting times like 8:45/ 8:53 or when All Saints was on following Reality shows like Dancing with the Stars and a different start time every week!?! Home and Away could suffer the same fate!?!
    When will 7 learn??

Viewers shouldn’t be having to make so much effort just to keep up with their show. They should be able to rely on advertised times and print guides to know when their show is on and not last minute checks of the EPG.

  3. The Block Sky High 9 1,191,000
    Home and Away 7 1,083,000
Don’t see it heading anywhere else soon. To be replaced with ???
Surely this mentality of GO!, 11, 7TWO being some remote regional, alien channels will end soon? These are just other channels, available to all at the press of a remote button. It matters not to me what channel anything’s on. If I want to watch it I can just as easily watch it here, there or wherever, except GEM and GO with those hideous bright purple WIN/GEM etc. logos (not watermarks – solid logos).

  4. You need to get an Electronic Program Guide or EPG like they have on Foxtel (I believe you can get them free), then you can check your schedules ahead of time.

In Qld, they also ran an hour on Wed to make up for last week the change of PM.

This very site is also very informative for keeping up with changes ( as best as David can).

All that being said, I do wish they would leave HnA alone five nights a week.

  5. My personal opinion of home and away is that it should have been laid to rest with dignity in 1997 but it still rates ok and even if it didn’t they would still make it for the poms

I agree. Seven are starting to treat Home and Away as badly as they do with their US programming. They swapped House Rules with a triple Home and Away a few weeks ago to protect House Rules from going up against Origin. I don’t think Home and Away will last much longer on the main channel, Seven seem far more interested in expanding their reality shows which rate much higher than Home and Away.

  7. Seven’s caught with AFL from 7pm Fridays in two states, then on the night of the PM change for some strange reason Melb ran H&A but Sydney didn’t thus throwing episodes out of sync. I’m assuming the two eps in NSW Wed this week was to catch up to Melb.
Yes, agree it would be nice if 7 at least made a mention of there being two eps ‘tonight’.
Wonder how much more TVNZ offered Endemol over what TV3 was paying. Would not be just TV3 being in receivership, as Endemol could have required advance payment, if not already getting that.

  8. I do wonder if Seven is losing interest in “Home and Away”. The way it is treated now, its hard to know exactly when it is playing–now that its four nights, its supposed to be half hour Mon-Wed and an hour on Thurs (which is not the way the series and the drama is structured and I am sure cant make the producers happy) but some weeks it will do an hour and a half on Thursdays when the station has something special at 7 30 he following Thursday and last week ran an hour on Wednesday as well as Thursday with no notification or advance warning. When a serial series is treated this badly it tends to suggest it is the beginning of the end and despite consistent ratings the station may feel its time to move on to something new. What do other people think?

  9. This will be a big blow for TV3. Over there it showed at 5:30pm before the news, and helped them bring the younger adults (and kids) to their 6pm news. Much like Deal and Millionaire do to Seven and Nine here.
