Top of the Lake tops with Emmys

Top of the Lake, American Horror Story, Game of Thrones and House of Cards all win Emmy nods.

2013-07-19_0119Jane Campion’s miniseries Top of the Lake has been nominated for 8 Emmy Awards including Best Miniseries or Movie, Best Actress in a Miniseries or Movie (Elisabeth Moss), Writing for a Miniseries or Movie, Directing for a Miniseries or Movie and Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie (Peter Mullan).

It also has nods for casting, photography and editing.

Top of the Lake was filmed in New Zealand for BBC, Sundance Channels and the UKTV channel.

Much of the talk today centres around House of Cards receiving 9 nominations, including Best Drama, Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama Series. The Netflix series joins Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove as being the first non-broadcast series to win Emmy nominations.

However the most nods went to American Horror Story: Asylum with 17 nominations, then Game of Thrones with 16 nods, Behind, the Candelabra with 15, and Boardwalk Empire with 10 nods.

But missing out were such names as Steve Buscemi, Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, John Slattery, Julianna Margulies, Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Kaley Cuoco, Zooey Deschanel, Eric Stonestreet and our own David Wenham.

  1. Just think – if Australia ever decides to stop producing soap opera schlock, bogan crime capers and z-grade comedies, an Aussie show might one day get nominated for an International Emmy.

  2. I agree that The Walking Dead should have got a nod and I also would have liked Shameless to get a nomination or two, brilliant show. It’s hard though because there’s so much good tv – it’s very competitive at the moment – I don’t know what nominations I would remove to get my suggestions in!

  3. Great to see Emilia Clarke nominated… well deserved. She faces stiff competition though.

Agree that it is a shame The Walking Dead hasn’t been nominated. It’s an extremely good show with fantastic acting. The whole show is about the relationships between the living people, and the zombies are only a side story.

  4. Jeff Probst snubbed again is a disgrace. One of the best seasons of Survivor and the way he handled the Brandon meltdown was brilliant. The guy deserves an Emmy.

Walking Dead snubbed in Best Drama, all great shows nominated so it’s hard I know, but it’s the best show on tv.

Big Bang better than Arrested Development, no way.

And funny how Jessica Lange is best actress, but Sarah Paulson supporting actress. Think Paulson had more screen time.

  5. Happy to see Laura Linney being nominated for the Big C. Surprised to see her show being in the mini-series categories (despite being the 4th season), but it is after all only a 4 episode series.

Good to see Betty White being nominated for reality host, despite her show getting axed at the end of the season.
