Chris Lilley back in new Ja’mie series

New ABC comedy Ja’mie: Private School Girl will air later this year.

New ImageRevealed on ABC TV’s social media channels today, the six-part half-hour comedy series will air later this year on both ABC and HBO.

ABC has finally confirmed Chris Lilley’s next project will see a return to schoolgirl Ja’mie King -as tipped by TV Tonight back in February.

Ja’mie: Private School Girl was announced last night via social media, with joint press releases by ABC and BBC.

The six part series follows Ja’mie in her final year of school at Hillford Girls Grammar School, far removed from Summer Heights High. Ja’mie experiences her last few weeks of school and a series of events that will change her life forever.

Creator Chris Lilley, said: “I find teenage girls endlessly funny. So being able to write for and play the meanest bitch in school has been so fun. I can’t wait to show everyone what Ja’mie’s been up to.”

Lilley’s return to a favourite character will come as good news to those who were disappointed by the less-buoyant series, Angry Boys.

ABC1 Channel Controller, Brendan Dahill, said: “Ja’mie King is easily one of the most cunning characters in a school uniform we’ve ever seen. I know viewers will enjoy keeping up with the high drama, high-pace life of a teenage girl going through the motions of finishing school.”

It will air on ABC and HBO later this year.

  1. Lilley’s great at writing what he knows, and Ja’mie is the perfect parody of private school education, with certain story lines of hers in Summer Heights High directly parodying specific North Shore schools.

Very much looking forward to seeing what Lilley’s got for us this time around.

  2. Angry Boys just went too far, it wasn’t funny, was degrading and the language was revolting.
However, I loved the Ja’mie character, and Mr G, stick to what you do well Chris and you will have another success.

  3. i was sceptical about where chris could go after Angry Boys, but a show about Ja’mie has me excited, dont think he can go wrong with Ja’mie. Chis clearly loves playing her and has a brain full of ideas for her. the DVDs for SHH and WCBH have heaps of quality deleted scenes, and there is probably more out there that didnt make the DVD.

  4. Really looking forward to this! Ja’mie is definitely one of the strongest characters Lilley has created and there is lots of material unlike the one-joke repetition of S-mouse and that Japanese Mother.

Very much hoping Mr G is featured in this series as I think he is the other really strong character. I think if Mr G was Ja’mie’s drama teacher it would be hilarious – love to see a stand-off between those two!

  5. Does anyone know if there will be other characters aside from Ja’mie? A few weeks ago Chris said “it’s along the same lines as my other shows, it’s a mockumentary style and I’ll play the characters”. So does that mean there are other characters yet to be announced? The title of the show makes it sound like it’s just about Ja’mie. Either way, can’t wait!

  6. Agreed Charlie. Glad it’s only 6 eps. Will hopefully make it sharper and less meandering than AB.

At least he doesn’t have to introduce a new character and allow time for us to get acquainted.

Just hope it’s back to his best form: funny, awkward and biting. With Ja’mie, there’s every chance of that.

  7. So so happy he chose to build his new series on Ja’mie, my favorite Chris Lilley character. After the disappointing “Angry Boys”, this announcement has alleviated all fears. Cannot wait!
