Gruen Planet: Sept 25

NRL or AFL? This week Gruen will explain why marketers are only interested in one of them.

4rhwThis week on Gruen, Wil Anderson, Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft are joined by communications strategist Carolyn Miller and Bram Williams from Archibald Williams.

On Gruen Planet this week, as we push deep into September, you can almost smell, almost touch, almost taste the Rugby League and Aussie Rules Grand Finals. Yet, even though the two codes have fan bases of similar size, and even though the two grand finals will be among the most watched programs on TV this year, only one of them seems to appeal to marketers. Why?

Also, our screens are being bombarded with Defence Force job ads. The ADF is one of the biggest advertisers in the country, spending $40 million a year to attract recruits. What are the challenges of selling a job that might involve you being shot? And how hard is to convince women to join when sex scandals clog the headlines?

8:30pm Wednesday ABC1.

  1. I personally don’t fit the demographic. Being Sydney born and now living in Brisbane, I was brought up in a very rugby league house, and unless the Lions or Suns or the finals are in the news then you get stuff all AFL coverage on FTA evening news. I have family in Melbourne who see little NRL coverage, so surely it depends on the state.

  2. i think it has alot to do with what you and your parents grew up with. If you lived in the Western or southern or south eastern part of the nation then AFL or Australian Rules footy will appeal to you but if you lived in the north east part of the nation then Rugby League or Union will appeal, seemingly the only truely national sports are Basketball, Tennis, Netball, Soccer (football) and Cricket.
