Hey Presto, Foxtel launching new movies internet deal.

Foxtel will launch a new streaming movie service to internet subscribers, with no lock-in contracts.

2013-09-23_0017Foxtel will launch Presto, a new streaming movie service to internet subscribers at a price of $24.99 per month with no lock-in contracts.

Available initially to PC and MAC users, it will be extended to compatible I0S and Android tablets shortly thereafter, without the need to subscribe to a basic tier or have home installation.

Presto will draw upon Foxtel’s studio deals with MGM, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Roadshow Films, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Hopscotch Entertainment One, ICON, Studiocanal and Transmission Films.

It will include access to seven Foxtel Movies channels: Foxtel Movies Premiere, Foxtel Movies Comedy, Foxtel Movies Drama/ Romance, Foxtel Movies Thriller/ Crime, Foxtel Movies Action/ Adventure, Foxtel Movies Family, and Foxtel Movies Masterpiece.

Presto will be the second internet-only offer trying to lure new customers, following the launch of Foxtel Play.

Richard Freudenstein, Foxtel Chief Executive, said: “Australians are hungry for different ways to experience great entertainment when they want and how they want. The launch of Presto as a second brand allows us to meet the needs of different customer segments more effectively and is another way Foxtel is continuing to make its content more accessible.

“Foxtel offers distinctive ways to watch: the market-leading full Foxtel service for the whole family, complete with the widest range of channels, high quality products like iQ, HD and Foxtel Go. We also offer flexible and spontaneous access to our content with Foxtel Play.

“Presto is the next major step in offering customers a product that’s just right for them. Presto will be a great online service for movie lovers with streaming through an intuitive interface and great movies backed by curated collections, recommendations and critics reviews.

“Our aim is to utilise Foxtel’s assets and expertise in a smart way to capture a healthy share of the growing digital market. We are already investing in content, platforms and experiences to delight movie-loving customers so it makes sense that we launch Presto as part of our digital media content strategy.”

Presto will launch later this year.

  1. Wowsers, $24.95… I think I hold the same sentiments as the others below.
It’s a lot of money for a streaming movie service.
If these companies woke up and charged something small $9.99 like Netflix, they’d probably see a large influx of subscribers.

  2. I agree with everyone else that $24.95 a month is ridiculous for online movies when it isn’t really offering a viable alternative to piracy or the legit offerings that are affordable.
I also agree with CraigW that all this focus on Foxtel’s IPTV services is leaving us traditional subscribers left with the same boring bone at the same ridiculous price – change needs to on the way!

  3. With all this positioning by Foxtel, I’d be expecting a full re-vamp over the summer on packages, channels and content for those of us who are ‘traditional’ subscribers to make sure there remains ‘value’ for money. Else why don’t we all just sign up to Foxtel Presto Play (or is that the ultimate idea)?

  4. Can’t wait to try to use this in suburban Wollongong on my Vodafone wireless internet ’cause I can’t actually get a cable connection (“sorry, no ‘ports’ ” – Telstra).

  5. A quote from the Australian Newspaper “Presto customers will get a monthly pass for $24.99, with additional charges applying for pay-per view titles”.

So it’s not like Netflix and it will cost you additional to see the newer films.

Thanks, but not thanks Foxtel. I’ll wait for a proper all in Movie Subscription service.
