How damn good is Ray Donovan?

Wow. Just wow. The way this family is imploding is devastating stuff.

2013-09-11_1314Wow. Just wow.

I haven’t had a chance much to write about  Ray Donovan lately.

Sometimes it’s a bit hard for me to give you the heads up on episodes that are fast-tracked because very little comes my way in terms of preview material (or even a  synopsis). I might get access to a season premiere, but then I’m watching broadcast episodes.

But I have to say how much I am enjoying this searing drama, and at this stage it’s likely to land high on my best of 2013 list.

Initially the premise didn’t do that much for me: LA ‘fix it’ guy to the stars is at odds with his father released from prison.

But the way this family is imploding is devastating stuff, combined with fantastic performances from people like Liev Schriber, Jon Voight and Paula Malcomson.

Last night’s episode was so volatile I thought I must be watching the season finale (2 more to go, yes!).

If you’re looking for something to take the place of Breaking Bad here it is right here.

Airs 9:30 Tuesdays on Showcase.

  1. Yes! Ray Donovan is my favourite show at the moment.
Can’t say I agree about FX though, so many ad breaks that you’d think you were on FTA.
Most breaks include (or are mainly) program promos, and it’s hard to pick when the actual program resumes sometimes! Annoying.
I’m looking for Showcase quality – without ads, without pop ups, and without watermarks.

  2. So much to like on FX and Showcase at the moment, this show is fantastic, The Bridge and Hell on Wheels, still warming up to Low Winter Sun . Walking Dead starting on 14/10, anyone catch ‘In The Flesh’ on SBS2, ? will keep watching but its a little depressing.

  3. I agree, David. This show had some weak earlier episodes, as soon as James Woods arrived…. Wow. The scenes with the FBI dude on acid were priceless.
As opposed to Desperately Devaluing Dexter. A shame. This final season is a real disappointment.

  4. Can’t stand it. Well made and acted but why?
One-and-a-half episode was more than enough for me.

The Boston Mafia in corporate Hollywood has no subtlety and just doesn’t work. The supporting characters are so over-the-top they belong in a freakshow not a realistic drama.

None of the characters behave in a sensible way and one of them are even the tiniest bit likable.

  5. Thanks for the heads up David.
Once Dexter and Breaking Bad wraps I haven’t got much in the pipeline and have been saving this one up – will most definitely check it out.

  6. Totally agree David. Another quality offering on Showcase – without ads, without pop ups, without watermarks, fast tracked and in High Definition.

Makes Free View channels seem totally amateur in comparison.
