Jacki Weaver to guest in Rebel Wilson’s Super Fun Night

Veteran performer Jacki Weaver will play Rebel Wilson's mother in her new US comedy.

2013-02-22_0145Another Aussie is set to appear in Rebel Wilson’s new US comedy, Super Fun Night.

Veteran performer Jacki Weaver will play Wilson’s mother in the comedy about three female friends getting into all manner of weekend shenanigans. Her character is a former Broadway showgirl who comes to town and instantly throws her daughter’s life into chaos.

Weaver’s Hollywood career took off after her Oscar-nominated performance in Animal Kingdom, leading to roles on Silver Linings Playbook and The McCarthys.

“When I was at university, as part of my theatre major, I would go and watch Jacki perform in these amazing plays in Sydney. She’s an inspiration to me and an Australian classic,” Wilson told the Hollywood Reporter. “She can be funny and real and super dramatic … often all at the same time. My real mother is going to be so impressed to find out Jacki is playing my mother. I know my sisters are fighting over which of them Ashley Tisdale is playing. I can’t wait to get on set with all these lovely ladies and crush it!”

Offspring‘s Kate Jenkinson has previously been announced to play a friend of Wilson’s character.

Nine is set to screen the comedy in October.

  1. I’m really glad to hear that another unknown Australian actress (Kate Jenkinson) will be starring in this. I remember her from a couple of guest appearances on Thank God You’re Here, and she also co-starred with Rebel Wilson on… *wince* The Wedge.

It never ceases to amaze me that the woman who got her start playing “Habib’s girlfriend” on Pizza, to playing a pokie maniac on one of the poorest excuses for a comedy in Australian history (The Wedge) would become a Hollywood success. I’m just awestruck by her success.

While I haven’t been particularly wowed by anything that she’s been involved in thus far, I do find Rebel to be utterly charming and I’ll give her sitcom a go. Here’s to the underdog.
