US TV-boyband Big Time Rush were the big hit at today’s SlimeFest event.
The four performers were greeted by thousands of squealing tweens and kids, many of whom were drenched in green goo. And loving it.
The annual concert staged by the Nickelodeon channel  at Olympic Park, Homebush, was hosted by energetic hosts Luke and Wyatt, who whipped the sellout crowd into a frenzy. These two ran amok on stage, and into the crowd, keeping the enthusiasm at a high while crew assembled the stage for the next act.
In between the slime was squirted and dropped upon delighted tweens, with the odd celebrity getting slimed: Commando, Reece Mastin and Rhiannon Fish.
The event, formerly the Kid’s Choice Awards, is now a pop concert with slime and an amusement sideshow outside the venue. Inside it’s a small army trying to make the theatrics run like clockwork so that the kids have the most fun.
Branding of Nickelodeon and associated sponsors is also a big part of the two shows.
Also proving popular with the kids were Guy Sebastian, Justice Crew, Samantha Jade, the Bondi Rescue boys, Heffron Drive and a 13 year old US singer named JadaGrace wearing a vampy outfit too hot for her very young years.
Also appearing briefly were Mike Goldman, Luke Jacobz, Sam Moran and Chris Sebastian.
There was also a message of individuality and self-esteem delivered with Guy Sebastian’s tween song Dare to Be Square, while a giant, inflatable Spongebob Squarepants travelled around the arena, moshpit-style.
Slimefest remains slimmer and trimmer than its predecessor -there’s no Orange Carpet, and the slime-riffic theatrics don’t quite match the giant periscope and waterfall of previous years. I kinda miss the KCAs for their marquee names and brilliant stunts. They were once the best awards show in the country.
But green colour and movement go a long way with this audience. Props to Like and Wyatt for linking it all together for their devoted audience.
If you got slimed you went home happy, if not there’s always next year.
Highlights of SlimeFest 2013 will air 5pm Monday on Nickelodeon.

what is the point of the slimefest anyway?
Branding with the demographic. It scores well on that front.
Absolutely agree about people missing the KCA’s.
Nick should seriously look at reviving a fully fledged Australian KCA’s event next year (complete with Orange Carpet): even if it’s on the same night as the US variant, with the US edition screened into the venue after the local KCA’s finished.
Slimefest and a local KCA’s can co-exist. It’s up to Nickelodeon to make it happen.
