Wake Up will launch on ABC News Breakfast’s 5th Birthday

November 4th will be a big day, as Wake Up launches on the same day ABC News Breakfast celebrates 5 years on air.

4abcnMonday November 4th will be a big day in morning television, not just because Wake Up and Studio 10 are launching, but because it will also be the day that ABC News Breakfast celebrates 5 years on air.

What an ironic birthday present for the ABC team: more competition.

However, ABC News Breakfast launched on November 3rd 2008 on ABC2 and lately has been averaging 100,000 viewers across ABC1 and ABC News 24. On Monday it rose to 110,000.

This puts pressure on Wake Up to hit the ground running. After all last year the failed Breakfast show was averaging around 50,000 on a good day and 30,000 on an average day.

Wake Up will be praying for gorgeous sunny weather on November 4, to make the most of its captivating backdrop at Manly.

Meanwhile with TEN flagging its launch date, you can bet that Sunrise and Today are booking big guests and front-loading their schedules for that same week, to try and diminish Wake Up‘s impact.

Game on, people.

  1. Not a fan of these sort of shows at all – I never turn on the TV in the morning as I don’t see the point – not really enough time to see anything important! – I get my news for the morning from the web, etc…

But TEN do have to do something – they have to show they are still a relevant network and compete with Seven and Nine. They have to for the sake of advertisers and the viewing public overall.

Whether Wake Up etc will work is to be seen – but lets hope they at least give it a shot and tweak as they go to make some effort. It will take viewers a long time to change morning habits – this should be more like a marathon, not a sprint.

  2. Wow! Such enthusiasm. Must admit I agree with them all though.
If ever two shows are going to bomb, these are they.
Ita and Jessica, whatever were you thinking?

  3. You guys really Rag on Channel Ten a lot…

I think it’s great that they’re doing a more youth based Breakfast show. if you’re in your twenties, getting ready for work in the morning, you don’t want to be watching Sunrise or Today.

All they’re doing is finding a gap in the market and trying to fill it, you cant blame them for that. Just because it doesn’t appeal to everyone, doesnt make it bad.

  4. Ten need to sack their Marketing team. Their promos lately have been downright annoying lately.
Asking us to call the host by nicknames does not do anything to get me to watch.

  5. The biggest problem ch10 will have with their new show, is an audience to promote it to. How will they let folk know that it is on when their ratings are so low. They could buy a couple of prime time advertising slots, from ch7 during XFactor I suppose. Othet than that it will go the same way every other initiative from ch10 this year and fall flat to start with.

  6. I don’t think the others will be too worried, a year to hire three out of work hosts, drive a camera crew down the road from Sydney and plonk a desk and couch in a studio by the beach, yer these guys are a nimble threat! I watch Sky News now, fed up of YouTube clips and endless cross promos. This isn’t going to bring me back to free to air in a hurry.
