Sonia Kruger to enter the Big Brother house

Drew and Boog are out, but what's in store for Jade, Tim and Tahan?

BB Drew & Boog- 5Big Brother host Sonia Kruger will enter the house tomorrow night as part of the show’s grand final.

Drew and Boog were evicted at the eleventh hour in Nine’s Big Brother leaving just Tim, Tahan and Jade.

“I will surprise them at some point in the house,” she told TV Tonight.

“(In 2012) I did for the winner, but it’s not like last year.”

So she will be going in to surprise all 3?

“It could be something like that.”

Last night Boog and Drew missed their chance at the Grand Final and the $250,000 prize.

When asked yesterday, host Sonia Kruger admitted she was expecting a Boog  / Jade double eviction.

“I’ve done my own straw poll and the general consensus is it will be Boog and Jade tonight, but I’m not a betting person and it never seems to pan out the way I expect it to,” she said at the time.

“I thought Ben was going to win it so my predictions have been terrible. I’m just surprised every week when there’s an eviction. I suppose I wasn’t surprised when Madaline was evicted because she was an Intruder. But when Ben was evicted I was really shocked and I think a lot of people were.”

Tim, Tahan and Jade will now face off in a Live finale tomorrow night with bad boy Tim the bookies’ favourite.

“From a media perspective we think Tim is kind of the favourite, because he has provided so much content. So perhaps we think from a media perspective he deserves to win. But for the general public, whenever I am on stage and I say Tahan’s name they go crazy,” Kruger said.

This year’s show has been a consistent performer for Nine, especially in the advertiser-friendly demographics and on social media.

Looking back over her second season, I ask Kruger to nominate her on-stage Eviction night highlights.

“Probably the interview with Tully when she came back and we got to ask her all those questions that we couldn’t ask her when she was evicted because she was unaware of her relationship status. We needed to let her have some privacy with her partner to work out where they were at,” she says.

“Some people said ‘You should have broken the news to her on stage’ but that was a personal, private matter. Not for me to announce on stage.

“I think the fact that she decided to come back and answer those questions once she’d dealt with her private situation was a really interesting night.

“And Ben’s eviction is the other stand-out moment.”

There is little doubt that former flight attendant Ben has become wildly-popular with Big Brother audiences. Kruger says he will feature in his own behind-the-scenes package tomorrow night.

“Ben is such a warm, lovable person,” she explains.

“When he came into my dressing room he’s a very affectionate person and you can’t help but get swept up in that when you’re around him. He’s a very tactile and funny person. I said ‘How has it been going?’ and he said, ‘Ohh I’ve been living on brown rice and condiments!’ He said he’s lost 4 kilos since he’s been out of the house. He’s been so busy running from appearance to appearance and been very much in demand.”

One of the favourite Big Brother finale moments is when the finalists are privvy to footage of news events that have unfolded during their 3 months in the house. This year Nine’s Peter Hitchener will reveal all to Jade, Tim and Tahan.

“There’s a lot they don’t know about obviously, the Royal Baby, the new Prime Minister, bushfires and all that sort of stuff. I don’t think we’ve had Peter Hitchener do it before so that will be great,” she says.

“All of the housemates will be represented onstage except for Justynn who was never an official housemate. But he’s there in the packages.”

But Kruger remains tight-lipped about other plans for the big night, which will air Live in all cities except Perth.

“I did see Beyonce the other night and I had thoughts about flying onto the stage.”

Big Brother finale airs 7:30pm AEDST. NB: TV Tonight will be blogging Live results.

  1. I was one of Gretel’s biggest fans, but I think Sonia has done an excellent job. She is able to ask the right probing questions, but without being seen as unfriendly, aggressive or not understanding of the BB experience.

Tully’s intellectual dishonesty was astounding on her eviction night – so it was great they had her back to actually answer questions, rather than looking like a trained politician who could avoid answering questions like a pro. (That she could “turn off” her lesbian sexuality in a flash after meeting the “right guy” sent LGBTI rights back decades though).

Will be interesting to see who wins — this has been a great season, where interesting house mates have been rewarded and the macho/cool/bogan clique was broken up early on.

The only disappointment is how so many of the housemates are convinced this is some sort of launching pad for a media career (the…

  2. I would love to see Gretel back, she was still the best host.
I don’t want Tahan to win, she is beautiful on the outside but not very nice on the inside.

  3. I have been entertained by Tim for almost 100 days – Tim for the win.

Jade may be the nicest one left but she’s been boring – was glad Ed was evicted so we didn’t have to hear ”You are so cute – You are so adorable – Will we work on the outside? – I’m sorry I said I loved you”…..

Tahan has also been entertaining but Tim has had me in hysterics!

  4. I want to like Sonia more in this role; she is such a witty and sexy woman, the host role just doesn’t lend itself enough to allow her to show off the way she did on dwts. I want Tim to win the least! Jade would be a major upset; Tahan somewhat expected, but Tim is enough of a narcissist now!

  5. @ren – with regards to Sonia’s interviewing style, I agree, I wish she would ask more interesting questions and push them a bit but I just assumed she was following directions? With the friendlier attitude of BB to the housemates and the rating of the show now I just wonder if she’s fed questions through her piece and they are all generally inoffensive.

  6. Did anyone else find the Tully reunion “pash” (in the true sense of the word) awkward? I just felt bad for Drew, it looked like she was trying to eat his face!

And (caveat, I’m doing HSC night marking at the moment so I’m very overtired) – it sounded to me like in the pre-recorded material, the producers let a Tim F Bomb through, when he was talking about squatters. anyone else hear it?

  7. Love Sonia she is a great host and has done an amazing job the show is one of my best shows on tv, I’m hoping Tahan will win!! Hope BB is a bit meaner next year haha just thought housemates got it a bit too easy..

  8. Sonia seems more relaxed and much better this year but still needs to be more cutting with the interviews. It really makes me appreciate the skill of Gretel Killeen!

I feel there could potentially be an upset this year with Jade in the mix. But Tim to win!

  9. Thanks again David.
Can’t believe Jade is in the final three i mean during last thursday trick or treat show to me it loooked like she didn’t care she seeems lost tho maybe that will help being under the rader hahah

  10. Love Sonia!

I knew Jade would be a dark horse. Ed leaving was the best thing to ever happen to her.

The best possible outcome for me is a Tahan v Tim final 2. They’ve been the most interesting.

  11. I really thought that Jade was going last night so now I hope she wins, I felt Drew was popular but the screaming girls obviously didn’t turn cheers into votes. Like Drew said she’s the nice one of the 3 left. Tim and Tahan seem to go to the diary room and play up to the camera(public watching) far too much. Also, why didn’t they give away a car this year!

  12. Yeah, Gretel used to go in the house too. I thought Peter Overton would do the news. I always like that bit.

I really don’t get why that nasty horrible Tahan is so popular. Why would people want someone like her to win. I hope Tim wins.

  13. Thanks David for the great article. I,too thought it would be a Boog/ Jade eviction so congrats to Jade for making top three. I still think Tahan for the win but am going for Tim.
    Also, loving that photo!
