TEN Upfronts: Sport, Kylie Kwong, and 6pm entertainment.

TEN turns to Event TV and Sport as part of a "revitalised schedule" in 2014 as it chases 25-54 demos.

TEN2014A new 6pm family entertainment show will air on TEN in 2014, as part of the network’s bid to lift its primetime ratings share.

The undisclosed new show was part of the announcements at the network’s 2014 Upfronts  at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney tonight.

Amongst other announcements: Kylie Kwong is joining the new season of MasterChef; The Bachelor will return; So You Think You Can Dance is one of the event titles (with more to be revealed) and major Sports events Big Bash League, Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games will drive the network’s sports offerings.

Secrets & Lies and Party Tricks join Puberty Blues, Wonderland, Offspring, Neighbours with a new digital-only drama, Lost With The Boys.

Have You Been Paying Attention? will have an “extended run.”

New international titles include 24: Live Another Day, The Millers, Crisis, Extant, Tyrant and on ELEVEN East End, Reign, How To Live With Your Parents and 1600 Penn.

Network Ten Chief Executive Officer, Hamish McLennan, said: “The first KFC T20 Big Bash League game on December 20 marks the start of TEN’s new programming strategy and lineup for 2014.

“From the Big Bash we go straight into the XXII Olympic Winter Games. Then the rest of our line-up for the first part of 2014 starts to roll out, including So You Think You Can Dance Australia, The Biggest Loser: Challenge Australia, Secrets & Lies and Puberty Blues.

“The new line-up clearly demonstrates TEN’s focus on Event TV and people aged 25 to 54 –the biggest and most important age group in television – and represents our strongest start for many years,” he said.

“TEN has seen growth in its 25 to 54 audience in recent months. We are already delivering big 25 to 54 audiences in many programs and we are determined to build on that in 2014.

“At the same time, ELEVEN will continue to offer compelling content for the 13 to 29 age group and ONE will sharpen its focus on men aged over 25 and sports fans.

“Our new industry-leading digital platform, tenplay, has posted strong growth since it launched on September 30. In 2014, we will be adding new distribution channels, new partners and new content, including Australian content that will be exclusive to tenplay,” Mr McLennan said.

TEN Chief Programming Officer, Beverley McGarvey, said: “Next year, Network TEN will present a revitalised program schedule across all our channels.

“Our aim is simple: to build our already engaged 25 to 54 audience on TEN by giving them premium sport, drama, entertainment, reality and news and information content in a consistent schedule.

“We will build our audience show by show, timeslot by timeslot. Our new family entertainment show for the 6pm weekdays timeslot is a key part of that plan and we are looking forward to releasing details of that show very soon,” she said.

“TEN pioneered Event TV in Australia and in 2014 we will bring viewers events such as So You Think You Can Dance Australia, MasterChef Australia, The Biggest Loser: Challenges Australia and The Bachelor Australia. We will announce more Event TV series next year.

“In 2014 Network TEN will have its strongest sport line-up in many years, including the KFC T20 Big Bash League, the XXII Olympic Winter Games, Formula One, Rugby Union and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games,” Ms McGarvey said.

“Next year, we will give viewers more reasons than ever to turn on TEN – turn on Event TV, turn on the best in Australian drama, turn on sport, turn on news, turn on the best from the US, and turn on anywhere, any time, on any screen.”

However the axe may have fallen on a swag of shows, with no mention of: Can of Worms, Revealed, A League of their Own, This Week Live, Recipe to Riches, Mr & Mrs Murder nor the previously announced Batavia and Come Date with Me.

  1. Hi David, sorry to message you again. Just thought you would like to know Devious Maids is set to premiere on the universal channel on the 24th of July 🙂

    I contacted Foxtel

  2. I don’t understand why witches of the east end has been brought to Australia on Eleven and Devious Maids hasn’t. Devious maids and witches of the east end were on at the same time of year in the same timeslot on the same night. Devious maids was first from June to September and witches of east end took the timeslot when finished.

Witches of the east didn’t reach 2 million views on any week and devious maids was above 2 million every week apart from the pilot. (1.99) which is close enough. And the season final was at almost 3 million viewers.

    Disappointing

  3. Let’s hope the 6pm family entertainment show is not produced by Roving Enterprises. Do something new that doesn’t involve unfunny comedians trying to be funny.

  4. Was hoping there might have been a HD announcement. Ten switching to HD as the primary channel after analogue switches off with One going back to SD.

  5. Might be a bit hard for them but it’d be nice if they mentioned if they were bringing back the American sports they show. They have a pretty loyal fanbase but they continue to treat us like crap.

  6. Wonderland also received the green light for a second season

Reported on the perth now website. Maybe they think next year when it comes back will be series 2 which isnt correct. They are episodes left over from series 1. Anyway I guess we will find out.

  7. @Maev…..Sydney – I reckon Daniel Ricciardo will do a lot better than Mark Webber, as he will be a good qualifier and a good racer. Talking about Mark Webber, Ten may get the rights to FIA WEC.

Isn’t King of the Nerds on Ten and The Americans. Also, Ten acquired more Melbourne Comedy Festival rights for a further few years

  8. Not a bad line up but as usual it will come down to having faith in these shows and not changing them around. Having consistancy is very important. I think the direction for the network is a good one. Glad they didnt launch a new News bulliten at 6pm knowing how entranched viewers are for 7 and 9. Really hoping its a fun game show at 6pm. Personally i think 11 needs to put Clueless with Sabrina the Teanage Witch those were good for 7 back in the day. The Simpsons at 6pm and new eps Animation Fixation and hopefully put Classic 90210 and Classic Melrose Place on 11 in Prime time slot i think that would work. Most content which was produced by Spelling Television rated well and i think the same would happen agian. As for sport not a bad lineup however if they don put in 110% it wont do anything for the Network. Cause of their image problem.

  9. @Harry

For Ten right now, the renewal of an existing show that rates 350,000 serves as a better base than the commissioning of a new show that currently rates 0. Especially given that the new show would get a publicity budget of 0 like everything else.

  10. Looks to me like 7Mate is becoming what ONE was trying to become on TEN.. There isn’t much there to make you get excited which is a shame, as I use to really really love channel Ten.. Now I just feel sorry for them. I hope that those shows work next year. It’s not good for anyone them being on the bottom, they need to do something really risky, fresh and exciting and something that hasn’t been done before. Good Luck for 2014 guys…

  11. @William I seem to remember it being announced around the time the last IPL was held.
Wasn’t wikipedia either, I’d had said that!!!
Didn’t say I was certain of it, just said “I was pretty sure 7 had signed it up’. No idea why, won’t rate, just like the CLT20!

  12. For what they pay for the Bachelor, believe it or not they could have a drama for cheaper!

Also, that type of reality format does not lend to event tv. It has no live elements.

This is just more bad strategy.

  13. This is pathetic!

There is no show there that will help get TEN out of the big hole Lachlan Murdoch has dug for them.

When shows that rate under 400,000 are renewed, then you know just how much trouble they are in. Have TEN ‘Been Paying Attention’ to the ratings?

Hamish keeps telling everyone that TEN had the wrong strategy, well this line up shows they now have no strategy. Big Bash will be a ratings disaster and it is now just a matter of time until Wake Up is canceled, only 28,000 viewers on Monday, that is half the audience of Breakfast when it can canned.

I predict TEN will go backwards next year!

  14. The Bachelor is just a dreadful mistake – the ratings weren’t that great, and yet – it probably alienates more of the older ten watchers(what’s left of them) …. than it brings ratings in …..

Logical to spend about 10 minutes on wake up promoting the TEN launch for next year …. nobody’s watching wake up, so it was just filler ……
