NITV birthday

NITV is marking its first birthday as part of SBS all this week with a special showcase of films and an anniversary special.

2013-12-11_0007Indigenous channel NITV is marking its first birthday as part of SBS all this week with a special showcase of films each night at 9pm.

Wednesday 11 December – Blackfellas – Doug Dooligan is released from prison where he was incarcerated for assault. Outside he is picked up by his charismatic childhood friend Floyd “Pretty Boy” Davies who was partially responsible for Doug’s incarceration—and taken to a remote Aboriginal community. He becomes attracted to local girl Polly and, upon learning that Floyd is still involved in criminal activities, decides to leave and visit his mother. Determined to stay out of trouble, Doug buys back his father’s old property, Yetticup, but not soon after Doug’s father reappears. (1993)

Thursday 12 December- Radiance – With the death of their mother, two sisters (Nona and Cressy) return to their childhood home in Northern Australia where their third sister, Mae, lived looking after their mother. The funeral happens and the three find themselves together in the house for the first time in years. With time to talk, drink and fight, past hurts are revealed and family secrets come out. (1998)

Friday 13 December- Ten Canoes- A story within a story. a man tells us one of the stories of his people and his land. It’s a story of an older man, Minygululu, who has three wives and realises that his younger brother Dayindi may trying to steal away the youngest wife. So, over a few days and several trips to hunt and gather, Minygululu tells Dayindi a story set in the time of their ancestors. Through stories, can values be taught and balance achieved? (2006)

Thursday 12 December is NITV’s birthday and NITV News will bring a slate of live community coverage to viewers while Awaken and Stan Grant bring  a one-hour anniversary special on NITV’s free-to-air anniversary:

BLACK FRIDAY 13 December
The week’s celebrations culminate in a deadly black night: 6pm – Behind the Heart – Special documentary that takes viewers behind the scenes at the mega launch for NITV on free-to-air that took place in Alice Springs last year.

7pm – From the Heart of Foundation – The special launch event concert that was beamed to the nation direct from Uluru, Alice Springs featuring Casey Donovan, Christine Anu, Dan Sultan and more!

    I noticed that SBS advertised the films on SBS1. Really good idea. I also wish to belatedly thank SBS for the King Solomon’s Mine documentary. I thought it was very interesting and informative.
