Denham Hitchcock joins Sunday Night

Former Nine US correspondent joins Seven after hopes for a 60 Minutes role were not realised.

2014-01-20_2317Former Nine US correspondent Denham Hitchcock has joined Seven’s Sunday Night.

Hitchcock left the Nine stable in mid December after his hopes for a 60 Minutes position were not realised.

He returns to Seven where he began straight out of high school in 1995, as an assistant and researcher with Today Tonight.

“I’ve been glued to Sunday Night for the last five years. I’m delighted to join its ranks, and thoroughly look forward to a much-promised ‘baptism of fire’,” he said.

“As a foreign correspondent, I’ve had the opportunity to cover some of the world’s biggest stories but for the first time in a long time I’ll have the chance to come home between stories. It’s a dream job. Not only do I get the chance to work with some of the best in the business but I have the added bonus of being based in the country that I love.”

Hitchcock’s previous roles include assistant chief of staff and producing with Nine, freelance reporter, editor and producer for Reuters, BSKYB and GMTV. He has covered stories in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America including Typhoon Haiyan, the Boston Bombings, the papal election in The Vatican City, Hurricane Sandy and the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school.

Sunday Night Executive Producer Mark Llewellyn said: “Denham has all the qualities that fill me with jealousy. He has been blessed with great looks, a keen brain, and is clearly a star in the making. If not for the fact that he is also an awesome bloke with a journalist’s thirst for a great yarn I’d be green with envy – instead I am over the moon at having him join Sunday Night.”

  1. Can he do reports on things sporty and watery, the kind where he has to participate…running, swimming, diving, sweating. Actually…bring back that splash show so we can see him in speedos.

  2. I hope they still continue to use guest reporters, I really like how Sunday Night uses all sorts of people, like Ben Robert-Smith and various other people from different fields to file reports. I have always enjoyed the variety of reporters they have. It’s an awesome current affairs show, I love it. Denholm has probably watched the show online if he has been based in the US for the last few years. Seven have made their programs available to view on Yahoo7 for many years now.

  3. Poor Denham bet the knives are out.. hope he doesn’t end up on the scrapheap with all the other hyped also rans.. Durie, Kruger, Mel, Molly, Mike Willesee, Derryn Hinch

  4. @Maxxdude -“‘ Why do Seven just poach ex Nine staffers for this show? Can’t they find staff on their own network?”, Because the know talent when they see it, unlike Nine. Nine do it too. Lisa Wilkinson, Georgie Gardner, Sonia Krugar and the rest.

  5. He was one of Nine’s best assets. Should be on 60 Minutes not Sunday Night.

  6. This bloke was based in the US for Nine for many years yet he reckons he was glued to watching Sunday Night for the past 5 years! Sounds like complete spin to me! How could be be watching Sunday Night in the US when he obviously spends most of his time in the gym?
