HBO has renewed The Newsroom for a third and final instalment.
The end comes with more demands on creator Aaron Sorkin, who has penned a film screenplay on Steve Jobs.
Hollywood Reporter notes the cast was locked into new deals in September, the same time that Jeff Daniels’ tweeted about a third season.
In addition to an Emmy win for Daniels the show has enjoyed decent ratings. The season-two premiere lured 2.2 million, up 4 percent from season one.
Joining Sorkin and executive producers Alan Poul and Scott Rudin is Paul Lieberstein, a former showrunner (and actor) of The Office.
The Sorkin creation will have no shortage of potential news events to incorporate into the third season, including the Newtown School shooting (December 2012) and the Boston Marathon massacre (April 2013).

Yes loved Season 2. Such a shame. Great show.
I’m crushed – it’s one of my top 3 shows of the last five years. Daniels is outrageously good in the role of Will McAvoy.
Nooooooooooo! I just got into this show! This is close to the best show I have ever seen. I’m going to miss it.
So The Newsroom is ending because Aaron Sorkin is not able to oversee it for much longer.
This is in contrast to The West Wing lasting for some years after Sorkin ceased his production involvement with it.
