ABC Friends considers standing in WA election

ABC supporters consider taking their cause all the way to the ballot box.

abcsThe newly-titled ABC Friends, formerly Friends of the ABC, is considering standing a representative in the upcoming WA senate election.

The suggestion emerged during an ABC Friends national conference in Melbourne this week.

“ABC Friends has received hundreds of phone calls, emails and letters in recent weeks. People are expressing their concern and joining,” said spokesperson, Glenys Stradijot.

“At the request of many West Australians who have contacted ABC Friends, the conference unanimously decided that ABC Friends consider fielding candidates in the WA Senate election it is expected will be held this year.

“Our thinking is: With the Government planning to review the ABC, it’s time that voters who appreciate the ABC had a say the ABC’s future.”

A final decision on standing a candidate is yet to be made.

ABC Friends is also seeking to meet with Communications Minister, Malcolm Turnbull.

“ABC Friends will request transparency and an opportunity for broad community input into Mr Turnbull’s efficiency review. It will seek an assurance that the Government will not break Prime Minister Abbott’s pre-election promise to maintain ABC funding. It will ask for Australia Network’s future with the ABC to remain secure and its independence to be upheld.”
