MKR tops 2.1m viewers

Ratings: My Kitchen Rules hits another season high as social media gets stuck into the WA duo.

2014-02-05_1015My Kitchen Rules last night hit another season high at 2.11m viewers as the most talked-about couple so far, Chloe and Kelly, were finally hosting a dinner event. In terms of scoring, they barely made it out of the kitchen alive.

The numbers reflect the show’s knack for casting, storytelling and promoting. Social media had plenty to say on the pair. But as the show moves to its second group of contestants tonight, don’t be surprised if Queensland starts to hog the conversation that was all going WA’s way until now.

It was double the numbers for The Block (1.03m viewers) while TEN’s Big Bash League scored 774,000 / 710,000 across two sessions, a good result for TEN.

TEN’s Big Bash continues tonight as the penultimate event before its final on Friday night, as a segue to its Winter Olympics season. But its upcoming Reality series So You Think You Can Dance Australia will have to face-off against a Sunday night edition of MKR and the first room reveal on The Block -neither of which will be a pushover.

Sunday is also the first official day of 2014 ratings. It’s gonna be a slap-down.

  1. I don’t like Mrk but it would be a better show if it wasn’t so badly scripted. The show is more about negative baseless comments and bitchiness. Unfortunately Aussies love negative tv.

  2. @Gabbo: Yes. That’s because there is zero connection between popularity and quality. TV ratings are all appealing to the masses, which usually involves dumbing down a TV show, in order to the lowest common denominator.

  3. It is amazing hearing all these negative comments about MKR. Why are people still shocked? This is their 5th season and people are still saying they can’t believe this trash is still on. Every year, I hear people saying they can’t believe this show is so contrived, fake, rigged, etc. It’d be interesting to see if they are from the same people every year. Well…$$$ talks..and don’t blame the network for showing it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. And there are lots of hardworking Aussies who just want to relax at home and indulge in a bit of guilty pleasure after a day’s work (ie mindless shows like MKR or Block). We seem to have some really snooty people here – just because something is not on the so called high-brow networks like SBS/ABC doesn’t mean it is bad. It is a democratic country and people should respect other people’s choices.

  4. I don’t watch MKR, but flicked over last night to see what all the fuss is about. I have to say, to me it’s a sad reflection on Australia that this is so popular and so many take it so seriously. It’s seems to be a very hateful show and there is so much editing, you don’t know what’s real and what’s not. It was obvious the girls weren’t going home and it would be a close vote to build up the drama. The viewers obviously want people to hate, so they had to stay in as it’s so early in the competition for them to go.

  5. Its funny hearing the WA girls interviewed on radio this morning and the presenters basically attacked them.

But its funny the ones that talked themselves up are the ones that fail except the twins who backed it up beautifully. I wouldnt have thought using puff pastry would be cheating. If they bought a pie crust then fair enough. But contestants use bought stock but I guess because Manu has a deal with Campbells its ok.

Once we get past the instant restaurants and into the challenges I think the girls will be ok.

Lets face it they are much better cooks than emelia and andrew. Thats the only thing I will defend them on.

But 7 would be loving the ratings.

  6. This results prove a sad reflection on Australian viewing habits! And another question where did all these new viewers come from ? It seems a lot of people just don’t watch Tv in summer? (Not)

  7. Getting sick of the “staged” shots on MKR, the edited shots of angry, sad, happy, faces inserted in when ever they want to build drama is really starting to annoy me. I agree with Ricoz.

  8. I vote we let WA free…..will take NZ and let WA become its own country….mining boom is ending we dont need there money anymore…..they just produce to many ________

  9. @LCDtv

I think it was Naughty Nanna in the kitchen, but much like the MKR judging and points given, I am having two bob each way, and not saying if Naughty Nanna was the perpetrator or the victim, as it could be only a knife edge between either.

  10. I watched to see what all the fuss is about. What contrived, overly scripted, cheaply made, nasty trash. Don’t the viewers realise how they’re being manipulated?

Come and get me MKR cult!

  11. LOL! Great episode of MKR last night, it was hilarious watching those two WA pretenders make out that they could cook. Of course they were going to stay in preference to that weird couple from the ACT. The girls are much better TV than they are. The meltdown on the MKR Facebook page last night is testament to Seven’s superior casting genius. I’ve never seen so much commentary, the ratings are going to go through the ceiling from now on. I don’t know why everyone loves the Victorian twins. I think they are abominable and just as bad as the WA pair.

  12. @buggirob, I think there’s a reason the judges give their score after the contestants. I reckon it’s so the producers can tell them who to keep in. There’s no way they would eliminate those 2 girls yet and with those ratings it appears they are right.

  13. Congratulations.. Seven has successfully merged cooking, reality and soap opera all into one program.. with the emphasis completely on soap opera.. to create ‘Cooking at Home.. and Away’.
If you think it’s about cooking and winning challenges, you’re sadly mistaken. Let’s keep the villains who cheated so we can keep the ‘story’ going.

I can’t wait until they add a murder mystery element, where one of couples is horrifically slaughtered in the kitchen during an ad break, and all of the other contestants are suspects.

    “Who Killed Chloe and Kelly?”

Pete and Manu must do an autopsy after they have all half-eaten the (delicious) corpses.

Then ‘Bones’, ‘Castle’ and the team from ‘Criminal Minds’ all make guest appearances competing to try and solve the double murder.. but the body count continues.. until there’s just one couple left alive. Then we reveal…

  14. This season is the most edited yet! The constant random camera shots of the contestants looking evil or with a smirk on their face when they serve the food or a comment is made.

  15. Seeing that there now appears to be no cooking rules what so ever, what next even more product placement, perhaps Flavorstone and/or Stonedine etc, with an inset of Glen doing an advertorial via scrolling tickers, and to maintain the MKR healthy eating ethos, toss in a Nutribullet or a soup maker as well.
Why stop there, why not let contestants order in a couple of courses of home delivered takeaways, that way the cooks could join in with the bitchy banter around the table in their own instant restaurant, with points given on how good/quick their fingers did the walking or for their selection and ease of use their phone app’s had performed.
In fact anything but a disqualification, or is this the twist in the plot many suspected, where because of the outcry, the Canberrans return.?

  16. MKR rules
Be interesting to see the time shifted data for The Block
David sorry to ask. When will you have the time shifted data published for last week ?

  17. Would like to congratulate channel 7 for sending out the message that its okay to cheat in a cooking competition – well done.

The girls should have gone home.
