US comedy actress Mary Grace Canfield, best known as handywoman ‘Ralph Monroe’ on Green Acres, has died aged 89.
She died of lung cancer at a hospice on Saturday.
Canfield appeared as the overall-wearing tomboy ‘Ralph’ on 41 episodes of Green Acres, which aired from 1965 until 1971. She always greeted Hooterville townsfolk with a cheery “Howdy doody.”
Sid Melton who played her brother on the show said she was named ‘Ralph’ because no one would ever hire a handyman who was a woman.
She previously had a blind date with Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle on a 1963 episode of The Andy Griffith Show and played Harriet Kravitz on four episodes of Bewitched. She also appeared on such shows as Hazel, The Hathaways, Family and General Hospital.
Film credits included Polyanna, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, Half a House and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Yes, between Alice Pearce passing away and Sandra Gould’s appearance as Gladys Kravitz, Mary Grace Canfield played the role of Harriet Kravitz, Abner’s sister. She was referred to as Miss Kravitz and was in 3 episodes.
Yes I should have known my Gladys Kravitzes from the rest. Thanks guys.
… and yet the death of Shirley Temple – famous for her 20th Century Fox kid movies and her TV show “Shirley Temple’s Storybook/Show”- 2 seasons of 41 eps between 1958 and 1961 – goes unrecognised on this blog… “sigh”…
Not sure that show aired here? But essentially she was a beloved film not television star.
She did play a role in Bewitched as Abner Kravitz’s sister, Harriet.
Hollywood Reporter indicates for 4 eps.
I don’t think she was Mrs Kravitz in Bewitched. That role was played by Alice Pearce and later Sandra Gould.
