Axed: Raising Hope

Dysfunctional no more as FOX cancels Raising Hope after four seasons.

2014-03-11_1310FOX has cancelled Raising Hope after four seasons.

The last episode for the dysfunctional Chance family raising a baby named Hope, will run as a two-part, one-hour finale in the US in early April.

Executive producer Mike Mariano said in a statement, “On behalf of myself, Greg Garcia and Raising Hope‘s amazing cast and crew, I would like to thank our audience for tuning in and supporting us over the last four seasons.

“We planned our Season 4 finale with this possibility in mind, and hope our loyal fans enjoy the way we’ve chosen to say goodbye to the Chances and to Natesville. Thanks again, and we’ll see you in syndication.”

“Getting to know and love the Chance family on Raising Hope has been a sweet, hilarious ride,” Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment and Joe Earley, chief operating officer, FOX Broadcasting Company added. “Thanks to the incredibly talented cast — along with Greg, Mike and the entire crew — for making us laugh for four fantastic seasons.”

Raising Hope still airs in Australia Monday nights on ELEVEN, at about 11 eps behind the US.

  1. As a fan of MNIEarl & RH, I am sad to see the latter
    terminated, but I accept that the premise had run
    its course & that effectively, the plot lines were flailing erratically. It had laugh out loud moments
    & great topical references, but it was obviously on
    its last legs. MNIEarl had slightly more potential,
    & was killed off prematurely IMHO… RH was effectively Garcia’s one-fingered salute to the TV
    executives , but it couldn’t last indefinitely, even with the best will in the world.

  2. The first couple of seasons were fun with crazy characters and lots of ideas all based around the UST between Jimmy and Sabrina.

    The problem with that is that they ran out of ideas by half way through S2 and such extreme characters have no potential for anything different. Once Jimmy and Sabrina hooked up it was effectively over and rewriting a backstory for Sabrina that she was trying to escape being rich was a sign of desperation.

    The last two seasons were repetitive and full of self-referential jokes, including about impending cancellation once Fox started moving it to worse and worse timeslots as lost nearly all its audience.

    S4 was purely to make 88 episodes to take it into syndication and minimise the losses.

  3. It’s a shame, it’s a dumb but fun show and that’s why I like it. way better then Mindy, New Girl, Middle, Modern Family, Big Bang, 2 Broke Girls and such.

    I loved the cameos from the Earl cast, same we won’t see more eps with them making an appearance. as well as Christopher Lloyd and the Delorian. funny cast, funny moments, don’t know why people didn’t watch it. it’s different, and that’s a good thing.

    It became less about ‘Raising Hope’ and more about the other characters as time went on. it was a great show in Season 1, hilarious but lost some quality I’d say from Season 3.

    we need more shows like this with dumb characters.

    RIP

  4. A pity but nothing good lasts forever-Greg Garcia has a knack for making stupidly endearing characters shine in this and ‘Earl’, both of which were worlds unto themselves.

  5. Never watched this show but did see promos for it and it looked fun. Only good thing to come from this news is Martha Plimpton might be around on the Good Wife more 🙂

  6. Some of TV’s finest examples of meta-references have come from this show:
    Virginia making comments about kids working in Spielberg movies but ending up as a mom [sic] in a sitcom (Martha Plimpton was in The Goonies);
    Burt waking up from a dream and yelling about killing Wild Bill Hickok (one of Garret Dillahunt’s characters in Deadwood did just that);
    A carer saying of Maw-Maw “Yesterday she said she won an Oscar and slept with Warren Beatty”.

    I’ll miss this show…

  7. And sadly another neat little quirky sitcom bites the dust, it’s a shame the networks here don’t have the intestinal fortitude to run shows like this, The Middle and many many others on the primary stations instead of feeding us endless repeats of the current favourite !!

  8. I thought this show was just underappreciated here. Sort of bitterly comforting to realise that it’s also underappreciated in America. A great demonstration that funny shows can have real heart without resorting to being sappy.

  9. Oh that’s a shame, it is a sweet and funny show. It used flashbacks and fantasies and sitcom constructs very well. Perhaps not enough happened across 4 seasons, but it was very character driven. 96 eps is a good run. Martha Plimpton needs her own show. Garrett Dillahunt too. Long may Chloris Leachman shine!
