Hunchback of Notre Dame the series?

FremantleMedia and Roland Joffé are planning a new version of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame for the small screen.

2014-03-20_0021FremantleMedia International and Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffé planning a new version of Victor Hugo’s classic The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, although no network is yet on board.

Under a co-development partnership, Joffé (The Killing Fields, The Mission) will write a retelling of the story to be titled Ugly.

The title role was so well personified by Charles Laughton in the 1939

The series will trace the character’s journey and aims to show what it means to be human regardless of outward appearances, set against the political, economic and social explosion of early 17th Century France.

Fremantle will be discussing the project with broadcasters at the upcoming MIP-TV market in Cannes.
