Game of Thrones ‘purple wedding’ breaks BitTorrent record

Game of Thrones 'purple wedding' breaks the record for the most people sharing a file simultaneously via BitTorrent.

2014-04-16_0958NB: I think we’re done with all those Spoiler warnings, so you’re now reading about aired Monday arvo content at your own peril….

Monday’s ‘purple wedding’ episode of Game of Thrones, which had fans in a spin, has broken the record for the most people sharing a file simultaneously via BitTorrent.

More than 193,000 people shared a single copy according to TorrentFreak, and roughly 1.5 million people downloaded the episode during the first day.

The previous record was set last year, when the season finale of Game of Thrones had 171,572 people sharing on a single tracker.

TorrentFreak estimates the episode was downloaded roughly 1.5 million times during the first day, making the show the likely candidate to be crowned the most-downloaded TV-show at the end of the year.

Previous data has revealed that Australia was the country with the most downloads anywhere in the world, with Melbourne at the top of the list of cities.

Foxtel also recorded good numbers for the deadly Joffrey episode, with its broadcasts ranking as the 2 x top entertainment shows for Monday.

  1. @mushi – it won’t happen ever. Not while Murdoch has the monopoly he enjoys and certainly not while the current federal government is so far in his back pocket they are practically his handkerchief 😉

  2. @mydoona, very few people in Australia that want to watch this show have Foxtel. And at the moment Foxtel is the only legal way to watch GOT in this country. If anything this result further strengthens the case for a legal streaming service of some description being given the rights. Which probably won’t happen for a long time to come

    1. Piracy is an industry issue which has long been reported on this site. In the same way people have left plenty of comments about “delaying show X will result in more illegal downloads.” There is a clear difference between reporting news and endorsing piracy, Rudi.
