Renewed: American Idol

FOX has renewed American Idol for a 14th season, despite hitting record lows.

Screen Shot 2014-05-09 at 3.15.31 pm.jpgFOX has renewed American Idol for a 14th season, despite the current season hitting record lows.

Still, at 12.3 million viewers, it’s none too shabby and after axing The X Factor earlier this year the network would have been heavily impacted by a double blow.

Idol’s next season will hit 15 cities for auditions from June including Minneapolis, Portland, Columbus, Kansas City, Richmond, Albuquerque and more.

Host Ryan Seacrest is nearing a deal to return but it’s not clear which judges will be back.

  1. Every season there’s always those who say ‘the talent isn’t as good as previous seasons’. It’s generally not true. The final 3 in this season are all very good. Yes some of the top 12 were pretty average but that’s always the case.
Jena Irene last night had just about the best performance I’ve seen in any season of Idol. Sony BMG would have to be pretty happy with some of the talent they’ve signed from this show.

  2. Idol’s other problems are high cost and declining merchandising.

But it’s still pulling a 1.6 with 18-49s for the semis, and with their scripted content averaging 1.0 and there non-scripted comedies in the second half of the season tanking they still need it. Especially as FOX aren’t piloting new shows next season.

  3. It’s a shame this season has dropped so low cause the judging panel has great chemistry. But the singers are very uninspiring, and the production as a whole seems somehow rushed.

There have been a few good performances, namely from Jena, but I think she’s the only contestant even trying.

  4. This season the judges have completely lost the plot as has the producers with these stupid “twists” where they let the contestants choose whether or not they get voted out this week or not. That is just wrong. I have a feeling Idol will have its last season next year. The show unfortunately has gone downhill.

  5. If you aren’t going to report US ratings by the correct measure, viewers 18-49, you would be better off not reporting it at all. 12.3 million viewers means nothing when it is rating so awfully in the demo.

    1. Judge Judy: Thanks for the feedback. I have repeatedly reported 18-49 demos for US shows across the life of this site. As I am filing for Australian readers I don’t feel the need to do this for every story, and in my experience readers are more interested in total viewers. Either way, the story comes with a link so you can click through for further detail.
