Returning: Real Humans

That kooky Swedish sci-fi series is finally back for its second season on SBS 2.

2014-06-30_0207Glad to see Swedish sci-fi series Real Humans is finally back for its second season on SBS 2.

This was a kooky drama from Scandinavia, part Stepford Wives, part Westworld, but just enough to keep me watching until the end -due in no small part to the performance by Pia Halvorsen as lawyer and mother, Inger Engman.

Kudos has the rights to an English adaptation but no word yet when it will emerge.

Created by Swedish writer and actor Lars Lundström, Real Humans is an enthralling thriller set in a parallel present in which the artificial human has come into its own. New technology and advancements in the field of science have made it possible to manufacture a product – a servant- like ‘hubot’ – that is so similar to a real human that it is often considered the perfect substitute.

The second season continues to explore a world in transition, where the boundaries between human and machine are being erased and at the same time intensified. A virulent virus is spreading like a pandemic, making infected hubots uncontrollable and dangerous. The public is advised to have their hubots tested and not to download programs or updates from unsafe internet sources.

Public resistance to hubot integration is growing ever stronger and as an ever growing number of people form relationships with hubots, the boundaries between human and machine become blurred. Humans make copies of themselves so close to the real thing they form emotional bonds and questions continue to be raised about what it really means to be human.

This is a threat that will have dire consequences.

Episode One:
A virus is spreading like a pandemic, making infected hubots uncontrollable and dangerous. Bea is reactivated after several months, and she resumes her desperate search for David’s lost code.

Tuesday, 15 July at 8.30pm on SBS 2.

  1. I found season 1 a bit slow to begin with, but it got better as it went along and by the end of the series I was right into it. It’s good original TV drama. Looking forward to catching up with my favourite hubots.

  2. Great to see this returning, the first season was excellent. I’ve been looking forward to a second.

Gotta love that “…advancements in the field of science” in the blurb!
