ONE helps TEN take third night -with network poised to win the week.

Ratings: TEN is on track to win the ratings week -which would be its best 50th birthday present of all.

mmelNever underestimate the importance of a strong multichannel.

TEN has managed its third night of the week despite none of its shows scoring above 850,000 viewers. That’s because its Commonwealth Games coverage on ONE saw it score a 9.4% share.

Network TEN share was 29.6% then Seven 28.6%, Nine 23.7%, ABC 14.0% and SBS 4.0%.

In primary channels TEN was third, but only 0.1% behind Nine.

More significantly, TEN is on track to win the ratings week -which would be its grandest 50th birthday present of all.

On current standings TEN is 29.6%, Seven 25.9% and Nine 24.8% with just three nights remaining.

  1. Shows they should have repeated their Winter Olympics strategy and continued with live coverage on One once Ten goes to air – the audience is clearly there.

Also shows the advantages in using multi channel for premium first run content rather than simulcasts and ancient reruns – especially for Ten which hasn’t got the goods on the main channel to be competing with Seven/Nine, but clearly can pull the audience away with stronger multi-channel programming.

  2. Live sporting events almost always deliver the ratings goods. Despite all the people writing the Commonwealth Games as a dated borefest, the ratings show that the viewing public have a healthy appetite for it. Good episode of Offspring last night, I’m glad to see the back of Thomas.

  3. Great news. But it was really unnecessary for Offspring to start at 9.10. They could have easily shaved 20-30 minutes off the Bachelor.

  4. @oceanographer there has been an enormous amount of criticism directed at Mel Mclaughlin via social media from men and women. Mclaughlin struggled in Sochi, umming and arghing constantly and that has continued in Glasgow. Greg Rust and Matt White are far superior.

@aesthetic on Saturday night Ten showed 1.5hrs of Mclaughlin and Thorpe gibbering on a couch in between ads while live sport was being played.

  5. Mel McLaughlin seems to be pulling in a lot of viewers for the obvious reasons, right gentlemen. Anyways they should make athletics no. 1 priority especially the track events. The hockey is just dead boring which is a sport which draws very little interest in the country.

  6. An okay start for The Bachelor, but I would have expected more considering Ten’s heavy advertising campaign. However this year Ten have the right timeslot from the get go, an established audience and a declining interest in the competition which should work in their favour. I expect it might lift once X Factor and the Games are gone.

  7. @aesthetic I watched for about 30 minutes last night between 10-11pm. Glasgow is 9 hours behind us. Saw about 2 minutes of action, the rest was Mel McLaughlin, Dave Culbert, Ian Thorpe, Steve Hooker etc rambling on. So you’re telling me there’s no live sport to show between 1-2pm?
I’ve got no problem with One being used as an encore service during the day (they did that for the Winter Olympics), I’m suggesting One should be 24/7 on top of the current coverage.

  8. Congrats to Ch 10. Glad they are having some success!
I have enjoyed B’fast TV while it has been on coverage of all sorts of sports. Found other networks reporting sports results from the Games during news shows to be appalling!

  9. I’ve haven’t found the Commonwealth Games coverage any good. There is nothing interesting on at night before I go to bed, and when I am fixing dinner they have only been replaying Australia’s golds in the pool and velodrome over and over again with lots of pointless talking.

Presumably there is better stuff on in the early hours of the morning which is replayed during the day but that’s of no use to me. Will probably run the DVR after Good Game and Real Human rpts and hope to catch men’s road time trial or some lawn bowls this evening.

  10. Some very promising signs for Ten.
If they had AFL on a Saturday or Thursday night weekly- they would be set!
Wouldn’t run it past them to pick up The Olympics on a long-term contract – Japan would be a massive winner in 2016 for the time zone.
Also, take a look at snagging the rights to an Australian version of NBCs new cooking/game show ‘Food Fight’ for a potential new hit in 2015.

  11. I just have to say how professional Matt White is compared to Mel McLaughlin.Matt makes it look effortless while Mel looks like she hasn’t read her notes.
Matt I feel is the reason the coverage is doing well & Ten would be mad not to let him loose in a breakfast show full time. Maybe it could be a sports/fitness/lifestyle show on weekends to begin with – but please without advertorials.

  12. The planets have aligned for Ten’s 50th. If only One had more quality sporting events the situation at Ten might improve. Happy Birthday Indeed.

  13. @Glennc, when everyone in Glasgow is sleeping Ten/One have no choice but to air delayed ‘encore’ footage from the live stuff they showed when we were all sleeping. It’s not the friendliest timezone for us.

  14. The Comm Games are doing much better than most cynics expected. Combine that with the renewed love affair with the back to basics Masterchef, a strong season of Offspring, a more competitive showing at 6pm and fatigue with their rivals’ bloated reality offerings has all proved very fruitful for Ten. Good to see a shake up in the usual proceedings, even if only for a week.

  15. And their Commonwealth Games coverage hasn’t been good either. Too many studio heads, too much of the coverage isn’t actually live. Its a shame really, their Winter Olympics coverage was top notch!
But it should be a well deserved week win for the Ten Network.

  16. It is extraordinary that the 4th placed network is on the verge of winning a week. Which we all know live sport is very important to have. Maybe Ten will consider on getting all sports rights coming up
