TEN takes ratings Gold on first night of Commonwealth Games

Ratings: TEN scores its best ratings share in 2 years, thanks to its MasterChef / Commonwealth Games combo.

2014-07-25_1013TEN won Gold in the ratings for Thursday with its MasterChef and Commonwealth Games combo sending Nine and Seven to Silver and Bronze, respectively.

TEN scored an excellent 31.4% share then Nine 24.0% and Seven 22.7%. ABC was 15.7% and SBS 6.3%.

It was TEN’s best share in two years, when Andy Allen was crowned 2012 MasterChef winner.

ONE’s share hit 7.4% but even encouragingly, TEN’s primary channel also out-rated Nine and Seven’s.

MasterChef Australia topped the night at 1.17m / 883,000 for TEN then Glasgow Live (911,000 / 438,000), The Project (605,000 / 466,000) and TEN Eyewitness News (574,000). It was also the first night that Family Feud was played on 2 rather than 3 channels, which saw it drop to 489,000 indicating it was previously drawing good numbers on ONE. The early morning Opening Ceremony however did not fire at 247,000.

Nine News (1.15m / 1.09m) was best for Nine then ACA (876,000), Big Bang (690,000 / 642,000), The Footy Show (669,000) and Hot Seat (624,000).

Seven News (1.07m / 931,000) led for Seven then Home and Away (840,000), Border Security: International (592,000), Million Dollar Minute (519,000) and What Really Happens in Bali (469,000). The movie Hitch was 238,000.

ABC News (828,000) topped ABC followed by 7:30 (645,000), The Time of our Lives (616,000), Catalyst (580,000), QI (430,000) and The Men Who Made Us Spend (344,000).

On SBS ONE it was Luke Nguyen’s France (258,000), Food Safari (230,000), The London Markets (165,000), Tour de France (165,000) and SBS World News (139,000).

ONE’s early evening Glasgow Live from 6pm was best on multichannels at 544,000 viewers.

  1. I cannot believe the poor coverage from channel 10 of the commonwealth games. Last night I was enjoying the diving then the channel said we had to switch to channel 10 and what did we get??? Certainly not diving instead we have to listen to Mel who in my opinion is useless, she spends ages talking and when she does take a breath there are only replays of action we have just seen on channel one

  2. Enjoyed the opening ceremony which I had recorded. Best bit was the Scottie dogs and their owners leading each country into the stadium. Only downside was Liz Ellis cracking on about netballers, maybe she should have done some homework about athletes from other sports. Would like to see some repeat coverage on weekends during the day.

  3. @Clash

The television networks do that in a lot of countries in the world. They tend to be more parochial towards the athletes representing their country. It’s not only an Australian thing. I do agree that they should have more of an international focus when covering these events.

  4. I did watch some Com Games early this morning…but only because I could not sleep…I am not a morning person…but enjoying what I have watched…and at night….
Terrific young athletes…well done to them all.

  5. Oh for#$### they’re doing it again!

If Oz isn’t competing then forget it as you won’t see it.

At this moment the Kiwis are playing Malawi in Netball and it is as close as…. This should be a definite but oh no there are Oz swimmers in the heats.

Multicultural society? Yeah right. Let’s see how parochial we can get and forget the rest.

    Aaaargh.

  6. I watched the games after masterchef finished last night and it was good viewing. Its a shame that all the swimming finals is on during the night or early morning but you cant help that. But I enjoyed the coverage and will continue to watch.

  7. There was some negativity before the games. There was criticisms that the Commonwealth Games weren’t attracting the most elite athletes.

However, it’s quite evident that many of those competing in the Commonwealth Games are very talented athletes and will go on to become very widely known and recognised for their talent.

  8. The sudden change in FF numbers just says that The Commonwealth Games is cannibalising it’s audience. Probably most switching from Ten or Eleven to watch the Games on One.

I have haven’t seen anything interesting from the Commonwealth games yet. Tonight I will be watching last mountain stage of the TdF from last night.

  9. More importantly than the media being sluggish David, where is the poster named Ditto while you are talking up TEN again. Two positive TEN reports in a week and yet nowhere to been seen on both occasions, guess if TEN have a down night Ditto will pop-up from behind his tumbleweed again.

    1. It did cross my mind earlier this week. Many people overlook it is possible to praise / criticise a network on the same day. It just depends what the story is. When you are drilling down as much as I do, chances are it happens a bit.

  10. Would be better if the Comm Games were all on ONE in HD – even if that meant ONE outrating TEN during coverage – like what happened with GEM and Nine during the Ashes last year (July/Aug).

I often wonder how many people there are who cannot get these FTA HD channels these days – must surely be a small percentage by now?

  11. Couple of things. TVTim Games coverage is on One (and in glorious HD!) before Ten blur-vision takes it over. So you didn’t have to miss anything.

And David you say that One’s coverage topped the multi-channels at 345k. According to your ratings rundown it was actually 544.000. A very impressive figure.

  12. Well done ten and actually watched the oh so good HD One coverage early on .. Frustrating that one is not used to long play events especially when hard to divert coverage away from the popular events such as swimming. Although agree the ten play app is good and if you have internet ready tv and good data plan i am sure ten is showing the way of the future

  13. I wonder what Ten could have achieved if they were true to themselves and importantly their viewers – namely;

    – Promote properly,
    – Better Production values (and better set design),
    – Better timeslot.

Maybe current management will claim as their own soon after promoting they had nothing to do with commissioning the rights (previous management line…blah blah).

What will they tell their investors – sorry we forgot or didn’t sell appropriately to advertisers – it surprised us !!!

  14. I guess there might be some audience overlap with FF and Glasgow.
The real test would be when it stops screening on the multichannels (and without the Games screening at 6pm) and whether the audience will switch to TEN.

  15. I think TEN should start their Comm Games coverage at 8:30pm instead of 9:30pm, would possibly boost their ratings even more, we only caught the tail end of the enthralling womens triathlon with it starting at 9:30, food for thought I think….
