AFTRS: Michael Rymer in conversation

2014-11-27_0042In-demand Australian Director Michael Rymer, renowned for having set the tone on the reimagined Battlestar Galactica, is set to appear in a one-off event at the  Australian Film Television and Radio School in December next month.

He will be discussing his work with clips plus a Q & A with the audience.

Rymer has an impressive credits including episodes of Hannibal and American Horror Story.

Michael Rymer will be discussing:
· Developing a career within the Hollywood system, and the differences between working as a director in Australia and the US

· The genres of sci-fi and horror and find out how genre programming and high-end drama have re-invigorated the television industry

· His tips and insights into the craft of directing – how he approaches casting, working with writers and visual effects teams within the world of genre productions in television

A native of Melbourne, Michael Rymer made his directorial debut with his own screenplay Angel Baby, which was filmed in Melbourne and was the recipient of 7 AFI Awards, and many other awards around the world. Rymer went on to direct a number of films including Miramax’s In Too Deep and Warner Bros.’ Queen of the Damned (a sequel to Interview with a Vampire) also filmed in Melbourne.

In North America, Rymer directed several television pilots including Haunted starring Matthew Fox; and Battlestar Galactica staring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell. He went on to direct over 30 hours of the hit show and became a producer on the series. Battlestar Galactica won Michael a Hugo, a Peabody and the American Film Award “For Excellence”. He was nominated for an Emmy for directing the three hour series finale in 2009.

In 2012 and 2013 Michael directed several episodes of NBC’s Hannibal starring Madds Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy and Lawrence Fishburne. He also was an executive producer and was nominated for a DGA award for “Outstanding Directing in a TV Mini-Series.”

Other shows Michael has worked on include Longmire and The Killing. Michael recently directed and is currently in post-production on the four-hour mini-series, Deadline Gallipoli for Matchbox Films Australia.
