TEN 2015 highlights: Celebrity, Drama, Sport.

Julia Morris joins TEN, new dramas on Princess Mary & Peter Brock, and The Bachelorette (but no word on Offspring).

2014-11-13_2309Julia Morris and Dr. Chris Brown will kick off TEN’s ratings year hosting I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! in a casting coup for the network.

Morris, whose own star shot back into the limelight with a reality celebrity show, was one of several surprise announcements made last night at TEN’s 2015 Upfronts at The Star in Sydney. TEN is keeping its celebrities under wraps for an on-air reveal next year.

Sarah Harris, as tipped by TV Tonight, will host Shark Tank with entrepreneurs Janine Allis, Andrew Banks, Steve Baxter, John McGrath and Naomi Simson.

New dramas include a telemovie about Princess Mary’s romance with Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark and a miniseries on racing champ Peter Brock.

Hit series The Bachelor returns along with The Bachelorette -drawing an audible cheer from some in the room.

Previously-announced Gogglebox, a co-production with Foxtel, is also coming and there is a tribute to our first ANZACs featuring network personalities.

Returning shows include MasterChef Australia, The Biggest Loser: Families, The Living Room, The Big Bash, plus the return of V8 Supercars. An unannounced “multi-night” entertainment show will also air later in the year. Neighbours also wins a special for the primary channel to mark its record-breaking 30 years on air.

But those awaiting some clarity on Offspring will have to keep waiting with the network still hopeful it can return. There is also no decision yet for Party Tricks.

TEN Chief Programming Officer, Beverley McGarvey, said: “In 2015, our viewers’ favourite franchises will be back, bigger and better than before.

“We are also adding new, proven and thoroughly researched shows that are guaranteed to get Australia talking, including I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, Shark Tank, Gogglebox, The Bachelorette Australia and a new, multi-night entertainment show we will announce in the new year.

“From Big Bash at the top of the year right through to proven successes such as The Bachelor Australia towards the end of the year – plus our ‘always on’ early evening line-up of TEN Eyewitness News, Family Feud and The Project – Network TEN is firmly focused on delivering consistency, growth, innovation and great entertainment in 2015,” she said.

CEO Hamish McLennan, said: “Over the past year, our focus on people 25 to 54 and Event TV, including premium live sport, has delivered what we promised: audience growth and greater consistency for viewers and advertisers.

“Next year, we will give Australians more of the shows they love from Network TEN – including MasterChef Australia, Family Feud, The Project, The Bachelor Australia and the KFC T20 Big Bash League – as well as new, exciting content in all genres.

“So far in 2014, we have increased our audience in 31 of the 63 half-hour blocks that make up prime time. Our aim in 2015 is simple: to build on that momentum and deliver even greater growth and consistency.”

The venue was decked out in jungle greens and opened with a lively African percussion group before Grant Denyer welcomed guests followed by Hamish McLennan, Chief Sales Officer Louise Barrett and Programming Chief Beverley McGarvey. Both McLennan and Horne asked advertisers to support a third Free to Air network in the market and a push for advertiser revenue to reflect audience revenue.

The presentation ended with an MGM-like assembly of stars on stage in a show of force for the coming year, followed by a clever social media wall flashing up Tweets and photos from those in the room.

NEW LOCAL CONTENT
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Hosted by Julia Morris (Full Frontal, Good News Week, House Husbands, Celebrity Apprentice) and Chris Brown (The Living Room, Bondi Vet), I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! will take 10 big-name celebrities and drop them in the middle of the South African jungle. The Australian version of the top-rating entertainment show in the UK will be a big, noisy and highly interactive television event over five nights a week. Produced by ITV Studios Australia, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! will run across television, online and social media, backed by a massive marketing campaign.

Shark Tank
Australians’ love of inventions and innovation will be more than satisfied by Shark Tank, a compelling and entertaining series for the whole family. Hosted by Sarah Harris (Studio 10) and produced by Shine Australia, the local version of the smash hit US series will feature big, crazy, practical and hilarious products and ideas presented to multi-millionaire “sharks”. If the sharks – Janine Allis (Boost Juice), Andrew Banks (Talent2), Steve Baxter (entrepreneur, investor, internet pioneer), John McGrath (McGrath Estate Agents) and Naomi Simson (Red Balloon) – like the idea, they will invest their own money to bring it to market.

Gogglebox
Australians love watching television. Now they can watch other Australians who love watching television thanks to Gogglebox, a unique, funny and often moving series jointly commissioned by Foxtel and Network Ten. Gogglebox is a television and social media smash in the UK, where its audience is rapidly growing. The Australian Gogglebox will be produced by Shine Australia and will debut in February.

The Bachelorette
In just two years, The Bachelor Australia has become a television, online and social media phenomenon. After the sensational aftermath of this year’s series, fans took to social media calling for a local version of The Bachelorette. Next year, their calls will be answered, as some of the country’s most eligible bachelors compete for the heart of just one girl.

Mary: The Making Of A Princess
She was a Tasmanian-born real estate agent living in Sydney. He was a Danish Crown Prince visiting Australia. They met in a pub and fell in love. Less than four years later, Mary Donaldson became Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark. Produced by FremantleMedia, this special television event will be filmed in Australia and Denmark.

The Peter Brock Story
He was a hero to generations of Australians, winning the Bathurst 1000 nine times and dominating motorsport for more than two decades. But the King of the Mountain was also a complex person, plagued by self-doubt. The Peter Brock Story, which will be produced by Shine Australia, tells the story of a unique Australian in a high-octane drama event.

Neighbours: 30 Years
It is the longest-running drama series in Australian television history and in March 2015, Neighbours will reach another milestone: its 30th birthday. To mark the occasion, TEN will broadcast a special celebration featuring interviews with many of the stars reflecting on their time on the show, favourite anecdotes and what Neighbours has meant to their careers, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce.

The First ANZACs
Next year is a landmark year for all Australians, as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign in World War I. The First ANZACs is a unique series of mini- documentaries that will bring to life the diaries and letters from these Australian heroes and heroines. The all-star cast includes Kat Stewart, Peter Phelps, Matt Day, Rodger Corser, Rob Carlton, Brooke Satchwell, Shane Jacobson and many more.

Baby Circle (branded content)
TEN’s top-rating day time line-up will welcome a new addition in 2015, when Baby Circle goes to air. Created for the parents of newborns to tweens, Baby Circle will offer parents and expectant parents advice, support, information and entertainment. It will be every parent’s perfect day time companion.

  1. Really glad to see HYBPA?, The Project and The Living Room among the returning local series – all of which have proven to be some of the most highly rated local series on TEN. I think TEN will have trouble with getting people back on board The Biggest Loser but best of luck to them. Disappointing not to see SYTYCD Australia renewed but it is no surprise given it’s ratings. In terms of Overseas programming, all are expected except for CSI Cyber and The Odd Couple. Big coup by TEN to get CSIC but if it turns out to be like The Finder (the Bones spin-off TEN got) it could end just as badly, but hopefully that’s not the case. And regarding the latter it’s good TEN are still trying to get sitcoms to work. Bravo TEN.

  2. That is a hideous line up. So hideous, it will probably work for them.

Sarah Harris is great, so good for her. I personally cannot stand Julia Morris, so now I have no interest in IACGMOOH. I also heard that Ten were having trouble convincing any “celebrities” to sign up to the show.

  3. Shark Tank with Sarah and Chris and Julia as hosts are promising.

The dramas all seem to be mini series/one offs. So they don’t have any longer term drama series or I guess they haven’t announced those at this stage?

  4. Looks like Ten will be trawling second hand New Zealand drama to meets it “Australian Content” drama quota. This loophole should have been closed years ago and it is within ACMA’s power to do so by increasing the minimum licence fee networks have to pay for NZ content. Bu let’s just hope Time Warner takes over Ten and not a Murdoch company with compliant Murdoch executives. Ten really needs a complete broom through it.

  5. Looks like I’ll be watching even less of 10 next year than I have this year. Zero of interest there outside of the ANZACs and some of their US programming.

  6. David, just a suggestion for your articles such as this which include lots of photos: Caption them (if WordPress allows). Because it’s probably pretty indicative of 10 right now that I have no idea who over half of the photos are of. Whichever show contains a guy making what appears to be a gun sign on that last photo I definitely wanna stay the hell away from.

  7. An excellent list of shows from O/S, better than the other stations.
However they can ditch 100% of their Australian content as far as I’m concerned! It all looks like complete rubbish.

  8. Looks like I will be watching ELEVEN more than the “main” channel. Happy to see most of my favourite overseas dramas will be returning though. Disappointed there’s no Puberty Blues listed – in fact Wonderland seems to be the only local drama series there.

  9. Whoops, sorry hit publish by mistake.

Looking forward to the Mary tele movie and Shark Tank.

Hoping the US version of SYTYCD is back too. Shame the local one didn’t work out.

  10. We’re currently ‘bingeing’ on Wonderland and are up to ep 9 – gotta say this season is much better than the first. Glad it seems to have been renewed.

Suprised CSI Cyber is leaping from 9 to 10. The trial ep in CSI last season looked really good.

  11. Party Tricks and Secrets and Lies both flopped. Offspring has peaked and makes no economic sense and Batavia sunk.

Ten obviously has enough drama points without them. They are going for what is popular and low risk at the moment, contest shows, sport and celebrity TVMs.

Any improvement will be incremental and won’t generate much extra revenue share, let alone extra dollars. Their major hope is that some elections increase total TV ad revenue. We shall see what who ever owns Ten next year thinks.

  12. What a shame no Puberty Blues. It looks like Offspring and Party Tricks are gone too. I’d say Wonderland is not renewed and they will do what they did last year and play out the current season. At least the ABC had some good news but with Time of Our Lives gone it looks like I’ll have a lot more time for Series on DVD.
Thanks David for always getting the heads up.

  13. “…the 63 half-hour blocks that make up prime time…” Huh?! Prime time = 6pm to midnight. Which means 12 half hour blocks per day. Which means 84 half hour blocks per week. I think McLennan is confused between “prime time” and “peak” (which is 6pm – 10.30pm).

  14. OMG is Nine really serious they didn’t even get the rights to CSI: Cyber stupid stupid stupid. Also on wiki (I know its not always reliable) but its go down that Channel Ten is going to produce The Glass House a similar format to Big Brother that failed in the US in 2012, any word on that?
