“We had some outrageous times.” ARIAs honour Molly & Countdown.

A tearful Molly Meldrum received a standing ovation as both he and Countdown were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

mollyawA tearful and fragile Molly Meldrum received a standing ovation as both he and Countdown were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, last night in Sydney.

Meldrum was presented with his accolade by close friends John Paul Young and Marcia Hines.

He paid tribute to the production staff at the iconic ABC show.

“It wasn’t me, it was them,” he said.

“We had some outrageous times, some hairy times, some absolutely superb acts, a few disasters -that was me- and some of my greatest mumbles, fumbles and tumbles were televised for you to see.

“You heard them and thought ‘What the F’s he talking about, for god’s sake?’

“I am here because I love music. I’m a fan of all the acts and artists we’ve had.

“It’s my passion, it’s my life and I have been so blessed to share this journey with so many wonderful, talented people.”

Meldrum acknowledged key creatives including Michael Shrimpton, Robbie Weekes, Grant Rule, Kris Noble, Ted Emery, plus Michael Gudinski, Denis Handlin and Michael Chugg.

“Get behind Australian music. I hope you won’t mind me saying this: do yourself a favour. I love you all,” he added.

Molly Meldrum and Countdown became the first non-music inductees into the Hall of Fame.

But the 2014 ARIAs belonged to Sia who won Album Of The Year, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release and Best Video -but was out of the country and unable to attend.

Also scoring trophies were Chet Faker, Sheppard, Iggy Azalea, 5 Seconds of Summer, Neil Finn & Paul Kelly and The Wiggles.

The ARIAs returned to TEN last night which redeemed its trainwreck 2010 event, with a big line up of stars including Katy Perry, One Direction and Jessica Mauboy.

  1. Molly’s induction was so touching.
Definitely the highlight of the ARIAS last night.
Loved his speech – brought a tear or two to my own eyes.
Great to see all the obvious affection from the audience for him.

Sad to see him so frail though.
He is truly a lovely, kind hearted person – his ABC interview on “One Plus One” last week was clear evidence of this.
Marcia and JPY were also fab with him.
Some really humorous banter between Molly and JPY , especially Molly’s comment about JPY “coming over to the dark side” and JPY’s retort ” about Molly “wishing that for a long time now”.
Couldn’t help noticing that JPY was looking quite a bit like Ronny Corbett last night.
    : )

  2. Why couldn’t Iggy Azalea provide a video package?
Sia would of never appeared even if she was in Sydney – the whole of her record deal is based around the fact she doesn’t have to do publicity.

  3. Ohh man it was an awesome night and thanks heaps to Ten for reminding us they are the kings when it comes to big entertainment shows, I wasn;t bored at all through the whole thing although the cutting of the Audience screams was weird.
