Peter Hughes to succeed Anna McMahon on WIN News Tas.

Tasmanian presenter signs after 30 years in television, but will be replaced by another veteran.

Tasmanian presenter Anna McMahon signed off from WIN News last week after 30 years in television, and fought back tears in her final bulletin.

McMahon began at TAS TV, prior to it becoming WIN Television, followed by 20 years interstate on such shows as Getaway, and News bulletins for Nine and TEN. She returned to front WIN News in 2009 but departs to focus on a family business.

Replacing her will be ABC radio presenter Peter Hughes who began his career in 1981 as a WIN Television newsreader.

WIN Television General Manager – Southern Region, Rod Jerman, said, “Peter Hughes brings with him a wealth of experience and an instinct for what’s important in news that can only be honed through years of getting out and getting involved with his communities.

“He understands the value of sharing information quickly and concisely with an audience and enjoys that sense of connecting with the people around him. It’s a pleasure to welcome him to our team.

“I want to develop and present creative, informative and relevant television and the WIN Network will allow me to engage fully with the community we’re targeting,” Hughes says.

“As a senior presenter with the ABC for nearly 30 years I have refined my skills across all avenues of broadcast journalism and I know I can help the team produce a strong, balanced bulletin each night that will meet the needs of viewers. It’s a great challenge heading into 2015.”

He begins on Monday.

  1. Interesting choice for WIN to go with another older news reader. They have been struggling against the Southern Cross News juggernaut for about 18 of the 20 years since aggregation. Has Peter Hughes left his ABC position, or will he be doing both roles now that the ABC/WIN Hobart studios are now co-located? I would have thought that a younger up and comer such as Georgia Love would have been a much better replacement paired with Brent Costelloe on sport to try and emulate the success Southern Cross has had over the past 15+ years with Jo Palmer.
