“She is the main breadwinner of the family," says father of Chrissie Swan, in the wake of a controversial tweet about parenting.

The family of Chrissie Swan, has defended her choice to participate in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! in the wake of a controversial tweet by showbiz commentator, Peter Ford.

On Friday Ford tweeted that Swan was chasing fame:

But her father, Gary Swan, told News Corp: “Chrissie is a wonderful mother.

“She is just doing what any modern working mother does — working.

“She is the main breadwinner of the family and she knows that this job could lead to other things.

“She can’t just sit on her backside hoping something will come along. She has to grab the opportunities as they come.”

On social media many questioned if Ford’s view would have been penned if a father had been separated from a 1 year old child.

Peter Ford told Mamma Mia the tweet was designed as a ‘hand-grenade’ teaser ahead of a radio spot, but regrets not using a question mark:

I should have put a question mark on that. It was a teaser. I do think it is interesting that times have changed. That a woman can go off and do a job. That’s not being critical. That’s just about how the world has changed. For better or for worse. I don’t know why this has turned into a man hating thing.

I’m not passing any judgement. I couldn’t go and leave my dogs for eight weeks. But that’s me.

Asked if the tweet was sexist he said:

That’s a fair criticism. But I don’t think any of them [the male I’m a Celeb participants] have one year olds and I don’t think we’ve seen them on tv crying about how much they are missing their children and want to leave – and she’s been free to leave since the day she arrived.

However as TV Tonight recently revealed, production contracts include heavy salary penalties -believed to be as high as 65%- for those who quit the series.

Tonight it may eventuate that the controversy has actually boosted her votes for the win.

Her partner, Chris Saville, has joined with family and friends of remaining finalists Barry Hall and Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff in South Africa to appear in the finale on TEN.

  1. It was a ridiculous thing to even tweet. I mean her family obviously backed her in and im sure her partner the chippy is perfectly capable of dealing with the children. Chrissie got fired from her radio gig. She probably wanted to do something way out of her comfort zone. Good one her.

  2. What a stupid thing to say. I don’t see him criticising the male contestants who are fathers. And I hope Chrissie does win IACGMOOH. She deserves to win and I hope it leads her to something new, maybe a job on TV. Go Chrissie!

  3. Well said Angela! I just wanted to add a bit about the editing. They have to say something first for it to be edited so I think people can’t blame editing for those bitchy remarks about Maureen especially. I can’t believe people are taking any notice at what Peter Ford says. I am going to miss this show after tonights finale!

    1. I will miss Celeb too, HeyJude.
Have found it really entertaining with a fab mix of contestants on the whole.
Will be interesting to see if it returns next year.

  4. Remember this was the woman that was busted smoking whilst heavily pregnant, so its no real surprise that she left her young family at home for over 6 weeks to go on a reality show….

  5. Ford accusing Swan of chasing fame? Pot. Kettle. Black. His personal vendetta against Swan has been going on for several years now – he directed a tirade of nasty tweets at Swan accusing her of using her children for fame after she appeared in a women’s magazine and on A Current Affair resulting in Swan blocking him. He crossed the line this time but has the audacity to play the victim when he has been called out. Let’s not forget Swan lost her job at the end of 2014. She was jobless so 6 weeks in the jungle for a reported $60k a week may very well mean she can spend the rest of the year at home with a children. Who are any of us to judge?

  6. The cynic in me thinks Peter Ford must be the patron of Chrissie’s charity. He’s pretty much handed the title to her.
What a stupid uneducated and misinformed thing to say anyway. No wonder he’s backtracking.

  7. Not sure Peter ford can criticize someone for chasing fame…pot, kettle, black. Having said that I hope chrissie doesn’t win based on her bullying…..society shouldn’t reward that. Go Freddie!

    1. Chrissie can be accused of gossip but certainly not bullying. Her and Joel are also at the Liberty of the editing of this program. The producers determine what to show. I don’t think any of us can honestly say we don’t make silly comments about people, sometimes it’s just venting. I reckon Chrissie won’t be the least bit surprised, she’s been around the industry awhile now and she’s a survivor. I am a fan. She is a strong capable woman.

      1. Yes, she is. Used to like Chrissie but not anymore after seeing another side to her here.
Don’t think she’s done herself any favours by going on Celeb.
Perhaps it is the editing.- who knows.
But whereas some others have come across in a good light, she hasn’t
She has appeared quite mean-spirited and two faced at times with her backbiting and everyone else has contributed far more in the challenges and in general.
        .
Really don’t think she deserves to win.
Regarding her leaving her young kids, why should that be an issue?
Agree that the money she earns going on Celeb will help support her family and enable her to spend more time with them when she gets out

        1. I totally agree with you Angela regarding Chrissie’s behaviour in the jungle but who knows, it could be due to the editing of the show. What Peter Ford said was horrible but it looks like he has pretty much handed the ‘Queen of the Jungle’ crown to Chrissie. I would have loved for either of the other two to win. I guess my vote and those on facebook wouldn’t make much difference.

          1. Yes, Kushaa, unfortunately could well be she gets the sympathy vote due to his ridiculous comment.
I really want one of the others two to win as well… I rarely vote but might just throw a couple Freddie’s way as he’s been such fun to watch and a top bloke as well.
