Seven has announced its commentary team for VFL games in 2015 and 2016, with Jason Bennett (pictured), Nigel Carmody and Campbell Brown.

Seven Melbourne has secured the exclusive free-to-air broadcast rights with AFL Victoria, screening the VFL ‘Match of the Round’ live on Channel 7 in Melbourne every week throughout the regular season, as well as VFL finals and the VFL Grand Final.

Award-winning sports broadcaster Jason Bennett, an AFL commentator from 2002-2006 before embarking on an international posting with ESPN and their popular program Aussies Abroad, is thrilled to be returning to his favourite passion – football.

“I’m now going to be back at the same famous old suburban grounds I visited with such excitement as a young footy fanatic. They will always be special to me – I’ve always got a thrill even just out of driving past them – and I can’t wait for the chance to commentate at some of those great old grounds that were off the AFL fixture by the time I started my broadcast career.

Brown is well known to fans as an AFL premiership star, feisty competitor, fearless with his forthright footy opinions and, above all, entertaining in his delivery.

Carmody brings a wealth of VFL experience and knowledge that is second to none over the last 15 years. He played 160 VFL games with the Casey Scorpions and Collingwood from 2000 to 2008, including a year as captain of the Scorpions in 2007.

The agreement adds to Seven’s long and proud association with VFL/AFL football stretching back to the first days of television and augments Seven’s current broadcast agreement with the AFL that sees four AFL matches broadcast each round.

It also builds on Seven’s ongoing support for grassroots football in Victoria, with Seven News Melbourne the official partner of the Western Region Football league.

  1. The interesting part of this story is that Jason Bennett has left ESPN and Aussies Abroad on ESPN will be no more. Disappointing. I quite enjoyed those shows he did.

  2. Would have thought Drew Morphet would have been brought back to 7 for this, Hopefully we in SA can see it on 7Mate aswell as SANFL. On the issue about 7 Perth not wanting West Perth Sponsership with Nine News to stand then why dont they offer them a better deal.

  3. Sometime in the nineteenth century SA took an hour off CST to be closer to the eastern states, now they should bite the bullet and go back to one hour less than said eastern states. Imagine what it would be like if WA had been setup first and the rest of the country followed, 15 million living on the west coast and 5 million in the east. How good would that be? 😀

    1. That was also require a huge pipeline to go either west or south to provide WA with water to support those people 😉

There were good reasons why the English knew all about the west coast long before the east coast, but chose not to settle there.

  4. ABC used to do a good job of covering the vfl with their commentary and the camera angles. I wonder how 7’s coverage will compare to theirs. Is the match they are going to air going to be the same time every week or are they going to vary it. ABC used to cover the 1pm Saturday afternoon match every week but that would clash with the ridiculously delayed Saturday afternoon afl match into Melbourne. Guess we’ll wait to hear to finer details of their coverage.

    1. 7 announced their general coverage plan when they won the rights…games will mostly be televised live on Saturday every week @ 12, which will act as the lead-in to their AFL coverage, occasionally some weeks they’ll opt to televise a Sunday game instead.

Here’s the TV schedule for the first month:
      Rd 1 – Footscray vs. Box Hill – Sat Apr 18 @ 12
      Rd 2 – Essendon v Collingwood – Sun Apr 26 @ 11.30
      Rd 3 – Coburg v Frankston – Sat May 2 @ 12
      Rd 4 – Casey v Sandy – Sat May 9 @ 12
