Dr. Phil clarifies disappointing comments Bruce Jenner is “too old” to transition

"You’re almost 80. What’s the point?" says stupid TV psychologist demonstrating complete ignorance of sexual identity.

TV psychologist Dr. Phil has demonstrated an extraordinary lack of insight into Transgender issues asking Jimmy Kimmel “what’s the point” of gender reassignment at the age of “80.”

Asked if he was disappointed the interview was going to Diane Sawyer and not him, McGraw said, “It would be boring to talk to me about that.

“First off, I would just say, ‘Look, if it’s what you want to do, do it. What the hell does it matter what anybody else thinks?”‘

All good so far…

“That’d be the first thirty seconds,” McGraw continued. “I guess we’d spend the next hour and 59 minutes saying, ‘You’re almost 80. What’s the point?’”

Jenner is actually 65 (and McGraw is 64).

Implying that Jenner was too old to be sexually active he added, “This is a theoretical exercise, right? I don’t know. He’s kinda, like, past prime for like… right?”

Was he just looking for a chat show punchline? As a psychologist McGraw seems to presume sexual identity is about sexual activity. It is not. It is about being who you are.

Kindly sit down and watch Transparent in which Maura is aged 70.

McGraw later clarified the comments to People magazine, “I’ve said long and loud it’s never too late to make a life change, and I’m personally cheering him on,” he says. “I’m glad he’s decided to set himself free in order to live his life authentically. It’s his life and his body and his decision – more power to him.”

Sounds like somebody had a word.

Jenner speaks with Diane Sawyer in a 20 / 20 interview that will air 11am Saturday on SKY News Business and 10:30pm Sunday on Nine.

  1. Dr Phil would have given different answers if Bruce Jenner was one of his high profile clients.
Dr Phil is not a currently licences Psychologist, he is a TV Show Host. McGraw ceased the practice of psychology. He kept his license current and in good standing until he elected to retire it 15 years later in 2006.

  2. McGraw did his training in the 70s and has for decades made his living making controversial tough love statements on TV. He probably didn’t know how old Jenner is (hard to tell because he looks like he’s had a lot of plastic surgery). You could imply that he meant to run marathons — McGraw never said so why pretend he did.

88% of the population doesn’t work after 65 (used to be 94% before the 2008 credit crisis). Surgery is not without risks for the elderly, he could die on the table or live to 100. You can’t know.

  3. Hopefully McGraw watched the interview because it was an exceptional and educational insight into transgender. McGraw certainly seems to require an education on the topic if his comments are anything to go by.

  4. Ugh, Dr Phil is the worst. He’s basically made his name by bullying and humiliating his guests. It shows how out of touch he is with current psychology and also how incredibly insensitive he is. I can’t imagine it would have even been on the table for him to get the interview anyway! He’s not a journalist

Bruce is so courageous to go through this, especially as he is a public figure, he doesn’t need stupid ignorant nasty comments such as this.

I do think it’s sad that he has not been able to transition (for whatever reason, I guess we’ll find out today) early in life because it must have been very emotionally draining to feel out of sync with your own body for such a long time. It will be interesting to hear though if he did want to transition earlier or came to the realisation later in life.

Yes Phil should watch Transparent David to see what it can be like for older…

  5. We should be nice to dr phil, like this article is just rude, making fun of him just because he said he thinks he’s to old and he can’t see the point that is his view point,

      1. And I see this site has a tv news site, with ur opinion but I wouldnt call it a blog it’s like saying ign is a blog, I enjoy this site very much best and only Aussie tv site

  6. His comment is off because it’s suggesting that gender reassignment is more about sexual appetite than an internal sense of self. People like him become blase and speak without thinking. What he said is rather an older, traditional viewpoint and I could admire him if, when caught saying it, he said just that and reflected upon it. Many of us hold an outdated ‘ism’ in some direction. It’s our ability to be critically reflexive that’s of greater import.

  7. I thought Dr Phil was an ‘honorary’ doctor. I don’t think he is professionally qualified. He keeps harping on about being homeless at 15, school of hard knocks blah blah blah.

  8. Well said David. I was very disappointed in Dr Phils comments. Gender Identity issues are very real, and all too often the subject of jokes and ill-conceived comments.

  9. I think the majority of folk do not have much of a clue about transgender stuff, it seems a very personal issue best handled by people with some knowledge and experience rather than the subject of trashy tv talk (phil n jimmy). I did read quite an interesting story about Frank Maloney (now Kellie), who has a big player, in the UK, in the macho world of boxing promotion/management. He always came over as a bit of a London geezer and was mgr of Lennox Lewis. She (new/current status) is now back in the boxing promoting game and a candidate for the centre right UKIP party in the next UK election…..now that would make a good tv mini series
