Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is developing a new series with HBO .

Entertainment Weekly reports the new project is titled, Captain Cosmos. Based around a TV writer the pilot is being written by Michael Cassutt (Z Nation).

“At the dawn of the age of TV in 1949, a visionary young writer creates a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell,” it reveals.

Meanwhile ahead of Game of Thrones’ return next week Martin says he’s considering a shocking development in his literary works, but the twist will not happen on the TV show:

In one intriguing new wrinkle, Martin says he just came up with a big, revealing twist on a long-time character that he never previously considered. “This is going to drive your readers crazy,” he teases, “but I love it. I’m still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It’s a great twist. It’s easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it’s just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. And with the various three, four characters involved… it all makes sense. But it’s nothing I’ve ever thought of before. And it’s nothing they can do in the show, because the show has already—on this particular character—made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions.”

    1. The more Martin focuses the longer the books become, the less of the intended story he fits in them, the greater the complexity and continuity errors and the further behind the publishing dates get. It will probably become academic soon because the series needs to put out a series every year and keep the momentum of the story going.

Splitting several years of the story across S5 & S6 with half the plot and characters in each year will start to stretch the audience’s patience. Especially since the battles that they build to have been pushed back into The Winds of Winter, which which best case will just be published by the time they are shooting S7 (if it gets renewed). At his current rate of 6 years a book Martin will not get A Dream of Spring done before the TV show gets into that material. That’s if he can finish it off in 7, increasing fat, books, which is looking less and less…

      1. They are using A Dance with Dragons and what is happening in Essos in S5. That is good news and makes more sense for a TV show.

They are continuing with their fleshed out story of Daenerys’s empire building and only parking the Bran, and possible Gendry (which is of little importance) this season.
