US network ABC has been handing out the good and bad news ahead of its Upfronts next week.

It’s bad news for Forever and Resurrection, seen in Australia on Nine and Seven respectively. Also ending is Cristela, airing here on Foxtel.

But there were plenty of renewals:

Modern Family, How to Get Away with Murder, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Once Upon a Time, The Goldbergs, Nashville, Fresh off the Boat, American Crime, The Middle, Galavant and Black-ish.

Remarkably there will also be a second season for Secrets and Lies, which began life on TEN but did not survive beyond one season. The Ryan Philippe series managed steady ratings in the US.

This puts Secrets and Lies into the unique situation of having more US episodes than its Australian original -and achievement it will share with Wilfred.

  1. Forever was a good series but the ratings were bad. I will miss it though. Alana De La Garza is stunning and a fantastic actress.

Don’t care about Resurrection. Awful series

  2. Annoyed about axing of Forever. I thought this would be renewed. Maybe a reprieve in the way of unforgettable. Hope someone picks it up.

  3. Just being annoying here, but if Secrets and Lies is in the “unique” position of having more US shows than Australian, and so does Wilfred, then it’s not “unique” 🙂

It’s terrible that a quality home-grown drama like S&L was watched by so few, and yet the idea is obviously working well in the US…

    1. ‘Secretions’ didn’t “work well in the US”-ratings were pretty ordinary but the network had few options but to renew due to failure of other shows-and there were very good reasons the 1st version failed here-see previous posts or IMDB re: these.

      1. Sorry to disappoint. Was in development as early as Feb 2013 in press releases I can find (and therefore earlier still). First TX of Broadchurch was March 2013 in the UK and July 2013 in Australia. Winter borrowed more of Broadchurch than S&L.

  4. The American version of ‘Review’ on Comedy Central will also exceed the original Aussie number of episodes once the second season airs Later this year.

  5. Happy for Agent Carter. I read the second season may be based in the current day and star Emily VanCamp as Agent 13 A.K.A Sharon Carter (Peggy’s niece) who featured in the second Captain America movie.

  6. LOL for a moment there I thought the headline read the Modern Family was axed. Didn’t get in to Forever or Resurrection so no big loss to me, shame Cristela is ending, I like that one. No shock MF, Castle and the rest listed are returning, Castle 8th season might be in it’s last.

  7. Great news for the ones that I expected to be renewed: Agents Of Shield, Once Upon a Time, How To Get Away With Murder, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. But I’m very disappointed that Forever didn’t get renewed. But also very happy about Fresh Off The Boat and definitely Agent Carter!

  8. A lot of good news in that for Seven with all three Shonda Rhimes series, Castle, SHIELD, Goldbergs and Once Upon A Time all getting renewals.

Now if only Seven could bother showing Once Upon A Time at some point!!

  9. Forever and Resurrection….neither of these shows had a story line that could carry on for very long…..I turned off Resurrection after we were inundated with returnees…got silly then…..and Nine turned me off Forever with double episodes…

    1. Same here. Think I lasted 6 eps of S1 of Resurrection. It was nicely made but seemed to lose direction quickly, a bit like what occurred with Heroes, except it happened three times as quickly.

Was going to have a look at Forever but it was on Nine and I need to take my shoes off to be able to count the number of good series that they have bumped, pulled, failed to even show, or otherwise stuffed around.

  10. Great news for Castle best show on tv at the moment. Also glad Fresh off the Boat was renewed It’s starting Sunday on Fox8 I’ll be giving it a go since it was renewed. Glad I did give up on Resurrection after season 1 by the time I remembered about it and was going to watch it the ratings were terrible.

    1. ABC haven’t said whether or not they have offered Katic enough money to resign (rumours are yes), or if its definitely a final season for Castle, and the number of eps.

Phillip’s arc has finished so is Secrets and Lies going to do a new story without the star, or rehash the first season ala Broadchurch?

In Forever, they cast the 3 leads well but method of resurrection was a gag of limited life span that never made much sense. They never did much with the characters or the myth arc leaving it for later seasons, which it was never going to get too. Mostly a Bones style procedural with really bad science at times irrelevant flashbacks. The writing and use of flashbacks did improve as it went on, though in one Abe was keen to do his duty in Vietnam but in another episode he was a bearded anti-war protester at college.
