‘Kalinda’ exiting The Good Wife

Minor Spoiler: Key characters seem to be departing US dramas lately, with Patrick Dempsey’s ‘Dr. McDreamy’ killed off in Grey’s Anatomy this week.

Next week Archie Panjabi’s ‘Kalinda’ makes her final appearance on The Good Wife.

Whilst it looked like she exited last week, both Alica Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and Kalinda (Panjabi) will come face to face in a scene together for the first time in 2 years.

Co-creators Robert and Michelle King discussed how her exit would impact the series, with the Hollywood Reporter:

Robert: In the final episode, I think, is the most emotional moment I’ve seen from a Kalinda storyline. Part of it is the very fact that it is a goodbye, but the other part is that Archie is amazing and Jules is amazing in these scenes.

How does her absence going into the next season affect the rest of the group?

Robert: It’s going to change it down to the core. We wanted to play these characters leaving as if it were reality, in that when someone leaves your core group, it’s almost like synapses in a brain trying to reconnect after a brain injury. It re-jiggles everything. You’re going to find Cary most affected, but also Diane and even Alicia is shaken. You’ll find in this last episode how much it shakes her. And next year, we have new cast members who, in completely different ways, will hopefully fulfill some of the energy that you will lose with Archie. Just like Matthew Goode in many ways served some of the requirements of not missing Josh Charles, you’ll hopefully find the same thing with some of the new actors.

There has been some talk about season seven possibly being the last. Is that something that you’ve talked about or discussed?

Robert: We have our own instincts on that, but obviously we never want to throw off CBS. We have our own feelings and we’d rather keep that silent at the moment.

  1. This show is great and this season, while not as good as the awesome 5th season, was solid as well. But I must say I am disappointed in the conclusion of the States Attorney plotline. I wonder where they’ll take the show next season?

  2. I’ll miss Kalinda. She was great on The Good Wife. And I can’t believe Archie and Juliana haven’t done a scene together in 2 years.

  3. Did Archie decide to leave or was she written out of the series? I know it’s been stated that her contract ended this season, but what I don’t know is whether it was Archie’s decision to move on or not. The show is brilliant!

  5. Has the reasons why they Alicia and Kalinda did not have any scenes together for two years been revealed? Seems there’s a story there. Its the same in days of our Lives with Marlena and Maggie, they used to be close friends, but I havn’t seen them in a scene together for years.

  6. CBS haven’t renewed it for S7 yet. Though the producers are making no secret of the fact that they haven’t been told to stop and are working on S7 already with scripts and casting of guest stars underway.
