More big screen stories are headed for the small screen.

Both 1980’s Urban Cowboy and 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley are in development as US series.

Paramount TV is remaking Urban Cowboy, which originally starred John Travolta and Debra Winger.

Hollywood Reporter says new story is described as “a modern reimagining of a pair of star-crossed young lovers who pursue their dreams and passions through the rodeo circuit, the grime of oil refineries, the sweat of line-dancing honky-tonks and the glamour of modern Texas. It’s about family legacies, starting over, finding true love and the American dream.”

Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Footloose 2011) is attached to write, direct and executive produce.

Mewanwhile The Talented Mr Ripley, which starred Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law is in development with Endemol Shine and Television 360.

Patricia Highsmith’s novels told the story of the charming psychopath Tom Ripley pulling off schemes around the globe.

Guymon Casady (Game of Thrones), Ben Forkner (Good People) and Philipp Keel will executive produce.

Producers hope to attach a writer or major filmmaker, as well as an actor, before shopping it to premium cable networks or streaming services.

  1. As long as they stick somewhat close to P. Highsmith’s writing they will be onto a winner here. Agree with others that ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ was one of the most underrated movies of that year.
