The Voice has powered up Nine pulling a season opener of 1.56m viewers.

That was well in front of House Rules (1.02m) and Masterchef (879,000) and puts the talent series on a strong footing.

But it is also down on 2014’s debut of 2.16m viewers when it returned in May.

Meanwhile it was 60 Minutes bizarre interview with Belle Gibson that seemed to leave everybody talking. It pulled 1.07m viewers amid speculation about how much the show may have paid her.

Nine network won the night with a 30.7% share then Seven 28.4%, TEN 18.7%, ABC 16.4% and SBS 5.8%.

Following The Voice for Nine was Nine News (1.33m) and 60 Minutes (1.07m). Documentary Jailhouse Girls was 405,000.

Seven News (1.18m) was best for Seven then House Rules (1.02m) and Sunday Night (846,000). Bones was 424,000.

MasterChef Australia was 879,000. Other TEN titles struggled with Modern Family (465,000 / 396,000), TEN Eyewitness News (434,000), CSI Cyber (429,000) and NCIS (254,000).

Inspector George Gently (829,000) was strong on ABC. ABC News followed with 796,000, Grand Designs (741,000) and Compass (343,000).

On SBS ONE it was The Missing Eighth Wonder of the World (258,000), Who Were the Greeks? (241,000), SBS World News (215,000). West of Memphis was 104,000.

ABC2’s Curious George topped multichannels with 236,000.

  1. the amount of adds on the voice is a joke .seven songs in a one and a half hour show the rest of the show was full of adds.come on Chanel nine .its just ridiculous and those stupid promos on that ridiculous karaoke show ..if this keeps up i wont be watching much longer . and whats with Delta and Ricky literally fighting over that male stripper/singer from Melbourne .its like both Ricky and Delta were on heat ,his voice wasnt even that great ,come on guys a bit of decorum, its national tv.

  2. Is Delta really the best Aussie Talent Nine can find? What about Iggy Aazlea? Why can’t we find our own big international stars? Why are we importing foreign stars ? Are they on 457 visas?

  3. Although not mentioned in the article – The Matildas Quarter Finals match rated well for SBS for the 6am start. I wonder what Weekend Sunrise and Today rated, since the game overlapped into their shows (they started at 7am, game finished at 8). I guess lower

  4. Nine would have been hoping for bigger numbers for The Voice as it tends to slide once the battle rounds begin. Masterchef took a hit but I am predicting it to bounce back tonight. The Voice was very quiet on social media.

  5. The promo for masterchief ruined the ratings. For two days it was hidden information, then on Sunday basically the whole mystery box was revealed.

  6. Fragmentation is really starting to show – remember the millions that would watch Idol when we had a much smaller population – now the networks pop champagne corks if 800,000 of our 23 million Aussies watch a show, and I wonder what will happen when the X Factor starts? Interesting.

  7. Can’t stand House Rules ( or any reno show) and have enjoyed watching Masterchef until now. But after weeks and weeks of 5 nights a week, I’m beginning to tire of the show. I watched The Voice last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. An entertaining singing show is what we need right now after all the cooking and renovating that has filled the airwaves. Will stick with The Voice when X Factor starts as it is a much better production.

  8. Left the Voice on live last night after the news as the kids wanted to watch it (usually record everything to watch later). When it got to 7.30 and we realised only 2 contestants had performed by then we were all begging to go back to Masterchef.

Recorded the rest of the Voice for kids to watch today (while I work!).

  9. Could the Masterchef party be over?
Have not had any Musical Reality TV for a while now. Audiences are probably ready for it again.
Should Ten consider Australian Idol for 2016?

  10. Watched the amazing House Rules reveal last night and wasn’t disappointed. Good to see it do over 1m. Then I watched The Voice’s entire show in under 20 minutes. So much filler content. Jessie J is the best thing about the show and its good to see it do well but it’s really really drawn out. I don’t like the Madden brothers though. Not a fan. Masterchef is a much better show and enjoyed last nights episode. Don’t think i’ll be watching much of The Voice to be honest. Will be interesting to see if there are fluctuations this year with The Voice. Overall though its a good start for the show.

  11. I was able to watch all 7 performances of The Voice, mainly during the ad breaks of Masterchef, so I didn’t sit the painful back stories of the contestants, and the judges trying to outdo each other and stamp their authority at the end of each performance….

      1. Agree. Jessie J and Ricky are the best. Delta is trying too hard and The Maddens are losing relevance. Just seen Ep.2 and not really impressed with the talent. The show will slowly wither away.

  12. And once again Nine pull Stalker without notice. And the networks wonder why viewership is down. It’s becoming ridiculous to follow when your show is and isn’t on week to week.

    1. I was wondering the same thing. I love Stalker and I thought it would’ve been good to have The Voice then 60mins and then Stalker.
they’ve done the same thing with CSI.
