Nancy Cartwright says The Simpsons owed a dignified ending

Writers should end Simpsons in a "dignified, respectable way" -not axed by TV execs, says voice behind Bart.

The voice behind Bart Simpson hopes the long running Simpsons series will end with some dignity, at a time of the creatives’ own choosing -not FOX Television’s.

Nancy Cartwright, appearing at Supanova Pop Culture Expos this month, has told Fairfax Media, “What I would really love to happen, if it’s not going to go on any more than that, I would like to put out there that it’s a decision that’s made outside of a negotiation.

“That it gives the writers a chance to be able to end the series in a dignified, respectable way that the public has earned.

“It’s just not right to do it any other way than that because to pull the rug out from so many people that have invested their career and all their training, as writers, as directors, as animators, as musicians, as voice artists, to get it pulled without any warning whatsoever and just say ‘we’re done’ is not right.

“We owe that to the public to give them a little bit of heads-up and say this is going to be it, and that’s what I wish for.”

  1. A livid General Donald Sutherland grabs the control tower microphone and shouts “Fire”. Dustin Hoffman’s helicopter vapourises as the two missiles go past on a downward trajectory towards Springfield. A brilliant flash and then a small column of smoke starts to form the familiar mushroom shape. Through the haze there is a freight train heading east. The dusty window of the guards van cannot completely conceal a plume of blue hair.
The camera pulls back to reveal the cloud slowly engulfing America and spreading further as time passes. Fingers of grey reach out to the solar system and eventually the entire universe becomes a dark globe suspended from a necklace around a giant cockroach. Hovering over the insect is a large boot. “Skrunch!” “Experiment failed,” booms a deep voice, “another ‘F’ for Trab Dog”.

  2. What does a proper ending even mean when the characters are the same episode #574 as they were in #1? After 27 years Bart enters the 5th grade?

The characters have accumulated events, that serve only as backstory, and then only sometimes. Sideshow Bob is the only character with that’s had any sort of arc — from frustrated sidekick to evil genius to mutant.

Fox will probably keep renewing it for syndication and OS sale. But they have lost Shearer and if one of the main voice actors, or even Azaria go that could mean the end.

  3. I’d say The Simpson’s is almost 20 seasons beyond a truly dignified ending.

It’s frightening to realise that not only do I know people who have never lived in a world without The Simpsons, but some of them have never lived in a world without _crap_ Simpsons…

    1. True, but it’d still be nice for a real series finale, something that could live up to what it used to be.
Cos some of the newer eps are still good!

      1. I’ve seen a few eps of this “supposedly” funny(not!) cartoon and it doesn’t hold a candle to the work of Ted Clampett, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng and others who produced the classic Warner Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes shorts. The Simpsons deserves to just disappear and be forgotten.

        1. Yeah, I do get what you’re saying, I’m mostly disappointing by the newer eps, but occasionally, maybe twice a season there’s something decent, which kinda lives up to what it used to be.
          Haha!
