Top Gear farewell: “Thank you very much for watching and… goodbye.”

There was an elephant in the room, and it went out with a whimper, as a glum Richard Hammond & James May said goodbye.

On the final Top Gear featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May there was an elephant in the room.

A big, grey replica anyway, representing another big grey mammal, who was absent from proceedings: Jeremy Clarkson.

Hammond and May hosted the links in the studio for the last 2 episodes with footage of the three, screening to Top Gear fans. Clarkson recorded a new voiceover for the show, although he was not paid.

After the two episodes had screened, their 12 years together ended with a whimper and no applause.

“We hope you enjoyed these films. Thank you for watching,” said Richard Hammond.

“Yes absolutely, thank you very much for watching and goodbye,” said James May.

Clarkson took to Twitter following the show to apologise to fans for the way his time on the programme ended.

  1. It was fun but not by any means their best and I think showed that the show had pretty much run its course. UK TV is generally pretty good about not flogging things to death and leaving on a high but I suppose Top Gear being the juggernaut that it was, it needed something like this to stop it going on for ever. Still a bit sad though, the end of an era and I don’t think we will see anything like this again on TV as it was a show that no one would have planned and really rested on the unique chemistry of the three hosts. No plans to watch the BBC replacement and even if the trio resurface in a new show it will be very difficult to recapture.

  2. Although it was sad to see TG end like this …it was also in line with some of their massive fail projects, like when they try to solve public transport or ambulances, it always comes to a shoddy end……just like the final ep albeit somewhat rebellious

  3. An absolute joke of a final episode. They didn’t even bother trying to finish the first film off (shots with cameramen in the background, visible mic booms etc) while the second one was finished off properly but fairly average by Top Gear standards.

Not sure what the point of it was from the BBC’s perspective (trying to damage the J, M & H trio?) but I’m not sure I’m willing to give Top Gear 3.0 a chance after that disaster was put to air.

  4. I woke up early to watch the final on Foxtel, I agree a sad end. No studio audiance, no on track tests, no SIARPC and no new. I understand why we got none of those things but I also felt the guys were only doing this as they were under contract to the BBC to complete the season.

Also noticed some off handed comments from Clarkson during the challenges, one about not liking working on the show.

I just hope any future venture with the guys and the new Top Gear line up works for all those involved.
