Upcoming SBS drama The Principal will have its Australian premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival next week.
The series, starring Alex Dimitriades, Aden Young and Mirrah Foulkes sees a murder at a boys’ high school in South West Sydney.
The Essential Media series is due to premiere on SBS in October.
When ambitious educator Matt Bashir (Alex Dimitriades) is given the principal’s job at Sydney’s notorious boys-only Boxdale High School, it’s hard to know whether the move is a promotion or a career killer. A simmering cauldron of socio-economic troubles and ethnic tensions, Boxdale is the kind of place that Bashir is determined to fix. Just when it seems like he is making headway, the body of one of the students is found dead on the school grounds, and everything Bashir has fought for begins falling apart.
Award-winning director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, MIFF 2010) makes his first foray into TV storytelling with the riveting drama of The Principal. A richly imagined, deeply troubling journey through the multicultural landscape of Australia, The Principal written by Kristen Dunphy (Heartbreak High) and Alice Addison (The Hunter) and produced by Ian Collie of Essential Media and Entertainment (Rake, Jack Irish, Saving Mr Banks), is an Australian television drama series at its most powerful and accomplished – confident, confronting and full of style.

Really looking forward to this one.
Alex is a very fine actor – good to see him back on our screens again.
Terrible trailer. Assuming this one was the work of SBS who seem to botch every premiere with the exception of hiring the Mt Druitt mayor.
The trailer released a couple of months ago was far better.
