Earlier this week a Nine programming exec acknowledged viewers were just looking for light relief. Those words proved true last night, but for their competitor, Seven.
On Tuesday internet cat videos managed to top The Block – get ready for pets who renovate in 2016? Or the return of Funniest Home Videos? Seven still has more up its sleeve, bumped to next Wednesday night.
TEN’s Spelling Bee grand final did quite well at 755,000 and rising to 901,000 for the Winner Announced.
Elsewhere ABC News did good business while Who Do You Think You Are? was nudging 400,000 on SBS.
Seven network won with 27.5% then Nine 25.6%, TEN 22.8%, ABC 17.7% and SBS 6.4%.
Seven News (1.07m / 1.03m) was best for Seven then Cats Make You Laugh Out Loud 2 (870,000), Home and Away (793,000), Winners and Losers (713,000) and Million Dollar Minute (539,000). Chicago Fire was 298,000 / 210,000.
Nine News (1.09m / 1.04m) led for Nine then A Current Affair (945,000), The Block (833,000), Hot Seat (561,000), and Life Story (508,000). CSI was 236,00 / 120,000.
The Great Australian Spelling Bee (Winner announced: 901,000 / Grand Final: 755,000) was best for TEN. The Project was 690,000 / 460,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 587,000, NCIS was 409,000 and NCIS: LA was 306,000.
ABC News was strong with 931,000 for ABC followed by 7:30 (718,000), Restoration Australia (593,000), Foreign Correspondent (558,000), Antiques Roadshow (359,000) and Getting Frank Gehry (335,000).
On SBS it was Who Do You Think You Are? (387,000), Insight (357,000), Dateline (168,000) and SBS World News (131,000).
ONE had a rare multichannel best with David Attenborough’s Animal House (288,000), oddly competing against new Attenborough on Nine.
The Morning Show: 152,000 / 100,000
Mornings: 111,000 / 73,000
Studio 10: 60,000 / 38,000
OzTAM Overnights: Tuesday 8 September 2015

Its fair to say that pussy power is strong and that we can all get into so much trouble by referring to the cats that way, so I will call them kitties. More kitty patrol on tv please….
Watched no tv last night.
Why would 146,000 people be interested in the winner of a show that they hadn’t watched?
Not how averaging works. 755,000 is the mean figure of a show that would have fluctuated over the hour, no doubt including the 900,000 who were watching a minute before the Winner Announced segment began. But we often see people come back for a finale who have dipped in and out across a series.
That cats face was what my face looked like when I saw that spelling bee had beaten the block and the cat show. I really wasn’t expecting that.
It’s a catastrophy.
bravo!
