Tonight SBS begins an eight part documentary series, The Seventies, that examines the individuals and events that influenced and shaped a decade.

Produced by CNN, this differs from the National Geographic series which has looked at recent decades. SBS will air this as double episodes over 4 weeks.

America lost its first war, endured two energy crises, and a President resigned following an unprecedented political scandal.

Television tackled once taboo subjects. Popular music enjoyed a multi-genre explosion, and there was a revolution in sexual mores and customs. Serial murder and other violent crime kept the nation on edge, and bombing, hijacking and the taking of hostages introduced the world to the modern face of terrorism.

Episode One: The United States Vs Richard Nixon and Television in the Seventies
A poorly executed political burglary leads Richard Nixon to be the only president in the history of the United States to resign while in office. Then, the 70’s introduces a new sophistication in TV programming and unique new formats with shows like Saturday Night Live, and Monday Night Football.

Sunday, 4 October at 8.35pm on SBS.
