Returning: Sherlock

Sherlock returns Saturday January 2nd, with a limited cinema release.

Sherlock‘s return has been confirmed as Saturday January 2nd on Stan.

It will also have a limited cinema release in Australia shortly thereafter at selected Event Cinemas, Dendy, Village and independent cinemas. It will include exclusive bonus material, with a guided tour of 221B Baker Street from Steven Moffat and a look behind the scenes featuring lead cast and crew. Tickets for these go on sale on October 30.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson, and the return of series regulars Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, Louise Brealey and Amanda Abbington, in a one-off 90 minute episode set in Victorian London in 1895.

An extended trailer has now been released.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride has been co-written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, is directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Line of Duty) and is produced by Hartswood Films for BBC One and co-produced by Masterpiece.

Co-creator and executive producer Steven Moffat, says: “Sherlock on the big screen. For us, it’s a giant leap backwards – into Victorian London. The mean streets of 1895 have never looked so good!”

Helen Pendlebury, Head of Business Development, BBC Worldwide ANZ, said: “The premiere of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will be a global event and we’re delighted that fans in Australia will have the chance to see it on the big screen, as well as on-demand through Stan as soon as it becomes available.”

Nick Forward, Stan’s Content & Product Director, said “We’re thrilled to be the Australian home of Sherlock and partner with BBC Worldwide ANZ to be part of this global fan event. We can’t wait to bring Sherlock: The Abominable Bride to Stan’s subscribers at the same time as the rest of the world.”

  1. so basically if you can’t get to a theatre to see it, or don’t have Stan, bad luck for you.. I’m really disappointed. We have Foxtel, and Presto.. I’m buggered if I’m going to pay for another streaming service to see it…

  2. Got really excited, then saw it’s going to Stan. Will it eventually air on ch 9 like it has in the past? Why would it go to Stan when it’s always been on 9 in the past?

          1. I just saw it’s released on DVD on Feb 3 so it it’s not before then, then I suspect you’re right.

    1. Because Nine own the exclusive first run rights to Sherlock in Australia, and half of Stan. They figure it’s better to use it to drive Stan subscriptions and sell cinema tickets than sell ads during it on Nine.

The wedding speech was the only part of S3 I enjoyed. So not likely to pay to see the Holiday special made to tide fans over till S4 finally arrives in 2017.
