The final high-profile local drama to air in the ratings year, Mary: The Making Of A Princess, screens on TEN later this month.

Emma Hamilton portrays Tasmanian-born Mary Donaldson (Emma Hamilton) and Ryan O’Kane plays Crown Prince Frederik André Henrik Christian of Denmark who embarked on a “fairy tale romance,” in this FremantleMedia telemovie.

This is the story of a fateful encounter and life-changing choices that led to one of Australia’s and the world’s most recognisable and romantic love stories.

At the height of Sydney Olympic fever in September, 2000, Mary Donaldson (Emma Hamilton) enters a Sydney pub packed with locals and tourists.

There she has a chance meeting with a 32-year old Dane (Ryan O’Kane) whose first words are simply, “Hi, I’m Fred”.

Having no idea that Fred is actually Crown Prince Frederik André Henrik Christian of Denmark, the spark between the couple is natural, immediate and genuine.

This special television event takes a look behind the fairy tale and how an independent Tassie girl with professional ambitions of her own, is left to inevitably navigate the complications and choices synonymous with a love affair with a Prince.

Mary and Fred’s love is destined to endure geographical distance, as well as cultural and language barriers, as they both navigate the path of true love and Mary’s transformation to become Crown Princess Mary, the future Queen of Denmark.

Sunday, November 15 at 8.30pm on TEN.

  1. I’ll have a look at it. But I agree with other comments. I guess they are just going on the facts of how they met. But its a nice love story and its great that after all these years they are still happily married.

  2. Since there would have been no input whatsoever from the subjects (I imagine), most of what we already know is on the record and the rest pure conjecture. Probably pretty hard to flesh it out for more than one episode I would think. Are Australians all that interested?

  3. I’m surprised it’s only a airing one night! Most other dramas like this air for two, eg. INXS, Peter Allen, Ivan Milat. I won’t be watching however, doesn’t really interest me, I’ll be watching A Beautiful Lie.
