All the drama of Shane Warne getting bitten by an anaconda helped I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here draw its best figures all week at 721,000 viewers. While it was down by 70,000 on last Thursday the show did top two demos.

No doubt it was also aided by having lighter competition, with no episode of MKR, while Nine’s Inside Story is underperforming.

Only Home and Away outranked it in the entertainment shows last night at 747,000.

ABC’s Jack Irish dropped slightly, from 711,000 to 682,000 while the final Family Law bowed out with 201,000 on SBS.

Seven network won with 28.0% then Nine 26.0%, TEN 20.5%, ABC 18.5% and SBS 6.9%.

Seven News was 964,000 / 925,000 for Seven then Home and Away (747,000), The Chase (582,000 / 385,000), Movie: Captain America (461,000) and The Big Bang Theory (455,000).

Nine News (902,000 / 822,000) was best for Nine then A Current Affair (749,000), RBT (518,000), Kings Cross ER (505,000), Inside Story (481,000), Hot Seat (429,000) and An Hour to Save Your Life (342,000).

I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here (721,000) led for TEN. The Project was 510,000 / 398,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 463,000 and Law and Order: SVU was 424,000 / 258,000.

ABC News (772,000), Jack Irish (682,000), 7:30 (681,000), Hatch Match & Dispatch (480,000) and No Offence (314,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Food Safari Fire (302,000), the final episode of The Family Law (201,000), Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook 197,000), Poh and Co (139,000), The Bridge (128,000) and SBS World News (119,000).

Shaun the Sheep ruled multichannels at 258,000.

  1. Would have thought that the numbers for Jack Irish would drop by more than they did. Presumably it did most of it’s audience shedding during the previous series and it’s just the Midsomer Murders crowd left.

    1. To riff on a theme, 77% of the Jack Irish audience are the 55+ crowd where the ABC dominates. I’m frustrated because it had the potential to be good if the writer and the producer were making the same show. Andrew Knight has delivered a script with his brand of comedy/drama but the producer and director seem determined to to make a serious thriller. Every time they cut to the Phillipines the story momentum (such as it is) just stops. We are not interested in the Jack/Linda relationship crisis but we know there will be coincidental crossover of the plot. The barflies are my favourite part of the show and even Guy Pearce thaws out a little when he’s with them.

      1. Again, you’ve hit the nail on the head. I did find it to be a little frustrating because it’s potential was evident but appeared to be either misunderstood or ignored by those in charge of actually making the program.

Contrast that with the Sam Neill-Bryan Brown cop-bad guy buddy show that was on last year (I can’t be bothered looking up the title). It wasn’t The Wire or Breaking Bad but it was well-written with two affable leads and didn’t try to be anything other than what it was. I quite enjoyed it.

  2. I was watching Ten news when the promo came on. “Tonight: Shane Warne gets bitten on the head by a snake!”

I stared at the TV dumbfounded. Turned it off right then and went to read a book.

I seriously believe this may be the point where I just stop watching free-to-air altogether. So much great TV being made all over the world, but the best we get here is Shane Warne getting bitten by a snake.

Is anyone else out there at all bothered by this?

    1. “Is anyone else out there at all bothered by this?”

Not since I stopped watching Aus commercial FTA. As you say, there is a lot of very good TV being made around the world and I, for one, refuse to waste my time with mediocre television (let alone banal stuff such as any show with the word “celebrity” in it).

      1. To be fair, I know Australia can produce quality drama (and sometimes comedy), mostly on ABC and SBS. That Celebrity promo was just so spectacularly inane I was embarrassed at the quality of material currently taking up space in prime-time. Like you say, I refuse to waste my time on it.
