How close is the breakfast battle right now? This close.

Has it ever been so close?

The battle in breakfast television has heated up to a fight far more exciting than anything in primetime.

Last week both shows were locked on 317,000 viewers each. While Today won Sydney and Melbourne, Sunrise scored Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

In the first 3 weeks of ratings this year, Today has two wins over Sunrise, with the third a dead heat.

Overnight ratings:
Feb 8-12
Today: 339,000
Sunrise: 325,000

Feb 15-19
Today: 320,000
Sunrise: 304,000

Feb 22- 26
Sunrise / Today:  317,000

Nine’s rise appears to have come at the same time as big changes at Sunrise and a much-denounced Sex and the City sketch.

Both shows are also hitting the road, with Sunrise on location all this week, and Today doing the same next week.

  1. I have watched Sunrise since it started but am struggling to stay with it. It needs to be a bit more newsier. I am not a Today fan but they have got the better content now.

  2. The fact that 9 have launched 9HD but 7 haven’t launched 7HD yet might have played a part in Nine having those wins. People love watching HD.

  3. Being honest, both shows are now as bad as each other. There is nothing great about them anymore except for Eddy on Sunrise but the rest is pretty meh all round. Could be looking for an alternative soon. ABC perhaps?

  4. Very small numbers watching . The salary cost alone must be 4 million for presenters & floor crew. Amazing these shows are still on as the segments are very poor entertainment .Hence only 600,000 people out of 6 million watch some of the shows !

    1. That’s not full context on breakfast TV which is drop in drop out viewing. Not many sit there and watch across a 2 hr block. So higher numbers at 8:30 will be dragged down by lower at 6:30, that’s how averaging works.
